ATT's what you need to know

Hello there, new guy here as you can see.
Here's my questions/situation;
1. I intend on buying my first handgun online from a reputable Canadian store.
Can I go ahead and order the pistol before I have the ATT since it's coming in the mail? Or is there different steps to take?

2. Do I have to join a club before I order the pistol?

I read the sticky but there's still a bit of confusion here on what I should do first and in what order. Thank you.

buy the gun first then join a range

Another inequity is the fact you must obtain a STATT to bring a new restricted home from a dealer specifically for that gun, even if you have a LTATT that you used to bring a gun with you to the dealer/ gunsmith.

How much is this costing us?

It has nothing to do with cost, this whole ATT LTASS STATT thing is a rice bowl issue for these people. Take away any of these little pieces of paper and you take away any reason for thier existance, they need to do this to substanciate thier own existance!

Scott

Then it has everything to do with cost.
They have to at least be making like $45-$50k a year, or more each.
This farce is costing us millions.
This needs to be dragged out into the media for what it is; an expensive joke!
That everybody pays for.

^^ pardon my alliteration.

care to elaborate? (im new and don't know what a gimped att is...)

I have an ungimped LTATT.
I bought a GSG 1911 from Dlask, and even though I had my ATT with me, he still had to get a STATT for me to transport it home.
I thought it was ridiculous!

In short.. any ATT that is not for "any restricted for which you posses the reg cert" for.. is gimped.. so in effect even a new gun which the dealer would have a reg cert for.. is legal.. and an ungimped att.. so long as you have a copy of it.. even while an xfer is "waiting" since it is perfectly legal to borrow a gun.

The entire premise of an ATT at all is beyond absurd of course... so we need again to all stand up and fight. #1.. to eliminate any/all restrictions of atts imposed by CFOs... and then to eliminate c-68 and all it's "wisdom" from our laws.. since it's pointless BS for starters.

Or am I one of the few w/the balls to take on this fight?

Oh and Dook was spot on for many of those "employed" within this fubar system... the reality is though we can keep them employeed... but in jobs that actually do some GOOD... if only they get a f'ing clue in the first place.

I have read most of the pages in this thread and would like to share my experiences thus far in Manitoba.

I have owned rifles/shotguns for many years but only recently purchased my first restricted. A glock 17 from policeordanance (excellent guys and outstanding price for ex-military). I paid for it and sent them all my information (pal, range name among other things). I then received a call from the MB CFO office saying they had my transfer pending and they couldn't process it until I provided them with proof that I had current (for the year of 2011) range membership at the range I indicated.
I faxed them a copy of my range membership along with the ungimped pdf att application that was posted in this thread. They also said they needed me to be a member before I could apply for an att. I asked the person I talked to there if this was law or policy. She said it was policy. I asked why they required this information if it wasn't law and again I was told it was because it was their policy.

So I had to be a range member to even buy a firearm. I had to be a range member to apply for a long term att. They said since it was being shipped from ONT I wouldn't need a short term one. I also called them yesterday to ask if they got all my faxes and I was told yes. They said they notified policeordanance of my transfer and also said that they shipped out my long term att.

I will post again once I get the att to see if they gave me everything I asked for in my application (the ungimped version which was posted here). I highly doubt it but you never know. I was pleased that they processed it and shipped it out within a day but if it's some gimped from point A to point B only version what can I do next?

I'm just a guy that read this thread, asked the right questions, filled out the right paperwork and still had to jump through all the stupid hoops. They hide behind the "policy" and I don't really know what I can do about that.

just wanted to add my experience (for ontario) as well; i just bought my first firearm, a M&P 9 from epps last month.

they did ask if i had a range membership and i said no; they asked if i intended to join one and i said i might join the barrie club (ended up joining silverdale) but that was the end of that. received the gun in mail a few days later.

now the story is its been sitting at my house locked up as only the club can apply for an ATT and they require the CSSA safety course that isn't scheduled until the end of May.

does anyone have a recent experience with ATTs? are they 'gimped' or for any restricted you own? any other info you might be able to provide would be much appreciated

Just got my renewed LTATT and just like the last it's good for any restricted registered to my address and to and from any approved shooting range.

I just did my CSSA course yesterday at silverdale and it was booked last week.

Yesterday course was a last minute thing, give Joan a call again and see if they have anything before the May 28,
Good Luck :)

thanks man, turns out they just penciled in may 12th, the safe queen may yet turn into a range queen before the end of the month (may that is lol but thats still much better than what i was looking at earlier) :)

Just wanted to update regarding my ATT. I got it in the mail today.

It is valid until my PAL expires, it allows me to transport my firearm daily from 00:00 to 00:00 to my range and any other range in MB at which I am a member or guest.

They did not give me this ATT for all firearms registered to me but rather only for the one I bought. I did not receive to all border crossings, service centers etc like I asked for either.

So I sent in the ungimped version and got this one back. Now what?

Call them up.. an let them know that what they issued is not what was asked for.. and that they immediately issue the ATT as applied for.. or a written refusal.

They sent you a gimped version.. and hoping you won't clue in and push back.

I have border crossing for IPSC competition....the question that are asking them self would be...why do you require this?? just let them know...also I'm sure you know the strict US requirement to bring gun's (Long or short) into the US...as for the service center....what service center in Winnipeg...they won't issued an ATT for something that doesn't exist :D

I find them easy to deal with...and quite reasonable...of course you can always fight them....

Ok, i have a LTATT that is valid for all the restricted that i own and its good for all the range, gunsmith and border crossing in alberta. Is this gimped or ungimped version. I have no clue as i just applied for it via phone and got it last month. Lol

If it is only good for restricted's that are registered to you then it is still gimped. An ungimped version in that aspect should be "All firearms for which the authorization holder has a valid registration certificate"

You can see the full ungimped application form link in several threads on here with download links.

Does it say only the ones registered to you? My AB LTATT says nothing about the firearm having to be registered to me, I didn't have to request an ungimped version I just phoned for a LTATT and this is what the AB CFO sent.
