H'ok guys,

This week I'm trying to estimate costs for Smith and Wesson New Model #3 parts. So far none of the smiths I've called have the parts or even have a clue what they would charge for them, so I'm asking you guys.

1) The New model #3 I received was listed as having a 6.5 inch barrel, but on inspection in fact has been cut down 1 inch and had a dovetailed front sight installed (the sight was brass soldered on and seems to have fallen off some time ago, since the break has aged).

How much value has been lost in the cut down barrel?

2) What would a replacement cylinder star cost? The ratchet on this one consistantly jams on one chamber and was all the teeth were filed significantly at one point.

3) The gun is missing the ringed plunger for the ejection system.

What do these cost?

Pictured is one from my other S&W new #3

I find myself wondering if you could make up another ratchet and silver solder it in place. Given the condition of the gun, I suspect the shortened barrel does not make a lot of difference in value. I think instead of trying to buy replacement parts which probably do not exist in practical terms, you should be thinking in terms of getting access to a lathe and doing your own work

Model 3 revolvers commonly had their barrels cut down in the day, and especially in consideration of it's general "rough" shape I really don't think the barrel length makes a bit of difference in it's value.

You might want to try David Chicoine at oldwestgunsmith.com. If there are parts to be had he will have them.

Muchos Gracias everyone - I hadn't heard of Mr Chicoine until now so I'll give him a try.

Mooncoon - you're darn right! I just spent 45 minutes turning a rod down and stepping it with a jig mounted in my drill press.... it's time to get a lathe... even a little one :p

I started with a Unimate Lathe there good for small parts i got mine for $300 in all orignal box from a garge sale.
Now i have a Craftex 19 inch lathe but i still use the unimate from time to time.
Check ebay for unimates they have a milling attachment.
I also had a Chineses 7x14 lathe the $450 on ebay and its electronics died after a year.

Makeing the parts is the way to go. alot of guys that have parts in the uSA wont mail em up here anyway.
