Mossberg 500, 535 or Benelli Nova?

Was looking to pick up a cheap gun for use for turkey and small game. Maybe occasional waterfowl. From a durability point of view is one brand of the three listed above better than the other? How performance? Want something that I can take into a swamp that will get wet alot, dirty and take a beating. I figure with this in mind a pump gun is best. Loads will likely not exceed 3 inchers. Wanted a fairly light gun to. Was going to get one of the above in some sort of camo pattern.

Are these 3 models the best for cheap guns that work? Or is there anything else to look at? I am fairly hesitant to go near Remington 870s these days due to thier ongoing problems.
 
Only one will fit you BEST, that's the one you want. I'm tempted to say the benny is the best one, but then there are lots more mossy out there. Nova is much easier to take down, but the main thing is still, Fit, fit, fit.
 
I'd recommend the Benelli if budget isn't a concern here. The 20ga that I had owned briefly was very well finished and handled great.

The Nova, however, doesn't come with shims, therefore, it may simply come down to proper fit question between the two brands.

The BPS Stalker would be around the similar price point as the Nova but it will be heavier. Camo models will cost more in the case of both.

Here is a Nova in the EE......could be a good deal should there be a bit more wiggle room in the asking price....

BTW for fit purposes I have a Citori field and the fit is perfect. Which of the guns above do you think is closest in fit to the citori? this might be a mail order gun here. How durable are the camo patterns?

I have a mossberg 590SPX, which is durable. I have handled the Novas which I hear are ok quality wise. Is the 500 alot cheaper grade than the 535s? The mossberg website doesnt say alot here. Thanks

Where the heck are you located? :D Isn't there a club or gunshop nearby?

I suppose the BPS Stalker will be the closest to that Citori (625 Field?) in terms of fit but DAC would still be a bit different. The DAH and LOP is the same.

The BPS is a nice pump action and I particularly like the tang safety + the ease of unloading live rounds from the tube mag. If it wasn't a fit issue (for me), I would've gotten the BPS Upland version in 20ga.

The DAC/DAH is both different in the case of the Nova. Take-down capability of the Nova is much simpler.

I have no personal experience with the Mossberg pump. Nevertheless, the reviews and experiences of end users have mostly been positive from all I have read.

Another thought, you may also wish to check out the Baikal MP-153 semi around the price range of a BPS/Nova and that is also one tough shotgun that could be abused without shedding tears in the process. :)
 
The Brownings look nice, but they seem to be abit heavy compared to the others. All 8-8.5lbs range. Heavy for a pump dont you think?

I am located near a few shops, I guess I should make the drive. But ive been putting it off...
 
What I'd choose is the Nova as I think they are better built guns than the Mossbergs. I also like the safety location on the Benelli as it takes less movement to disengage compared to the top safety of the Mossberg. But ultimately you'll need to get to a store and put them in your own hands to see what feels best.
 
The BPS will be heavier but then I find most Browning field models as comparatively heavy including some of their so called featherweights. :)

X2 on that Nova (depending on fit), particularly if that is a 20ga and it would be around 6.5lbs. The sub-gauge shouldn't be a constraint for Turkey, small ducks over decoys etc.
 
Well ill chime in on the 535 I have one. It is light and if u are going to shoot some heavier loads it will give u some kick, lighter than a nova Im sure.
The 535 is pretty durable I have shot about 1000rnds or so on mine and no real wear on parts, but the reciever is alloy. It comes with chokes and u can use slugs if u want.
It isnt dirt cheap but affordable, mid range in your description of choices, u can get some of those Mossberg mavericks sets for dirt cheap, but no camo color.
The finish is a anodizing or a powder coat? not sure but it does mark when u touch shell bases to the receiver.

Does your 535 have one of those ports on the end of it? The website seems to show most of them with ported barrels or chokes.

For the Nova in 20 Gauge, I looked at that and thought it would be to weak for Turkey and Goose, am I looking at this wrong?
 
The BPS Stalker (with 3in chambers) is listed at Epps for $562 Synthetic and $662 Camo.....if there isn't much mobility involved a heavier shotgun shouldn't be an issue.

If you are looking for a lighter shotgun, the 20ga could do Turkey provided one keeps in mind certain limitations. As far as Geese is concerned, it would all come down to shooting scenarios an individual may be faced with......there are folks who feel nothing short of 3.5in shell is effective for that bird. :)

My thoughts still keep straying to a Baikal MP-153 semi-auto that could also nicely fit the bill here in every aspect except for the light weight part.....think it will weigh close to a 12ga BPS.

A 12ga Nova will be comparatively a bit lighter.....personally, I have found the forend of the 12ga Nova quite bulky whereas the BPS not as such.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I dont hunt with 3.5s at most I use 3s but also use alot of 2 3/4s when I can find the right loads. I will go over and look at EPPs, I must have been looking at the wrong thing on the BPS for thier prices. THanks
 
Hmmm decisions..

So the BPS in Duck Blind camo 3 inch chamber is $662

The Nova in Max 4 camo is $688

Between the two of these, any thoughts as to what is the winner? Use is waterfowl, Turkey and maybe Rabbits. Wont use it for Deer or similar type stuff as I have other guns.

After I rusted my CZ solid while out in the field, inspite of a heavy coating of grease and wax, I am abit leery of going back into the swamp with my nice Citori. The CZ magazines are rusted to crap and are new.

I have a un-ported barrel, all black vent rib. I guess I have an earlier model, I didnt know they made a ported model.
 
You can get a Mossberg combo (Turkey, slug and waterfowl) with 3 barrels in camo from Epps for $450 which includes 4 choke tubes. A similar combo for a Mossberg 535 is $100 more.

The turkey choke and barrel are worth it alone. Brownings are nice but extra barrels are hard to come by and almost the cost of a Mossberg 500 itself.
