6.5 wsm anybody?

anybody here have one? I was just wondering if someone had ever played with 140 grainers in this cartridge. Do you know what velocities it gives/powder type. I was thinking that rl 17 might be a good powder for it?
I didn`t find a whole lot in searching - maybe that`s a sign?

264 Win Mag Redux ;)

Many benchrest shooter's have expressed interest in 6.5 WSM but 7-300 WSM and 7 WSM are so good that nobody experimented much with it. A huge issue is that 7mm VLD bullets are superior to everything else except for 300gr .338 bullets. When it come to target and hunting bullets 7mm rules.

Only 2 medium bore WSM sell: the 270 WSM and the 300 WSM. Early this spring I was shopping for a 7 WSM and ended up buying a 270 WSM because 7 WSM rifles are difficult to find and 7 WSM ammo is almost impossible to find.

6.5mm is great but it's cursed in North America,

Thanks guys, I was thinking of using the 140 berger which will is right up there the 7mm`s. The 270 wsm is probably resonable close I would imagine.
 
don't waste your money on bergers anymore go with the smk 123 or 142.

i own a 6.5 wsm. barrel needs a cleaning and some loads to try er out. should be fun. might retire the 260 rem till i toast this barrel.
 
What about case life. I don't anneal and my 300wsm brass cracks on the necks and shoulders after about 4 reloads. I am fl sizing as well
 
I'm sure it will be wildcatted soon if not already. The 6.5x284 is a good one too but as it is harsh on barrels I would expect that '6.5 wsm' would be even worse. I think the .264 Min Mag also demonstrated that problem. I guess if you keep a rifle like a 6.5 wsm around and do little but sight it in, take a few shots, and reconfirm zero next season, you'll get good use out of it. If you do a ton of handloading, you'll be burning out the barrel pretty quick.

Stop FL sizing every time and it should improve significantly. I neck size my .338 Win Mag and find that I need to bump the shoulder about every 4 firings, but have not had one split yet after 8+ firings on some pieces. A few have had the primer pockets loosen up, but no splits of any sort.

The WSM's got necked down to 6.5 about two minutes after the first brass hit the R&D floor!:)
They have been doing grand things for many years at 1,000 bench competitions, and killing stuff as well!:D

BR guys are not concerned nearly so much with barrel life as they are consistancey of groups and scores at 1,000, and the WSM does just fine in that department.
My first one went south at right around 2,500 rounds, but would still hit a clay at 500, so it was still a vable long range rifle - it just wasn't a decent rifle for shooting tight groups!
besides, I had a hankering for a 6.5WSSM!
The throat of that rifle , BTW had a full four inches gone when Mick McPhee re -chambered it to the shorter cartridge!:eek:
I may just call up Bronco Mudder and see if he wants t0 trade the 6.5WSM I originally sold him!!:D

Shot Tylers 6.5WSM today, McGowen Bull contour 8 twist screwed to a Savage long mag. action with an Elite 4200 6-24X shooting 140 SMK's. Recoil was non existent and sub moa at 260 yards was normal and boring.

I may have to have a 6.5 shorty done up...only in the almighty RSAUM :popCorn:

There is no need for any wildact with that attitude, but where do you think many of our now factory cartridges came from??:cool: Besides "need " has nothing to do with it, it's like souping up a new car or hotrodding an old one.

Archie, after wildcatting and experimenting with a whole mess of cases ( including the RSAUM), I think the the SAUM is the best of them as far as the short fats go!
it worked very well, brass was pretty consistent, and it shot flat......

This is a fallacy, that particular wildcat is no harder on barrels than many of our standard cartridges, the fact remains that if you are shooting a lot -and especially match shooting, you are going to be changing barrels, be it a 308 or a 220 swift.
if you are worried about barrel life , better stay away from shooting competitions, or high volume varmint shooting, or any other type of shooting where lots of rounds are involved.
