for the price, I'd take the Z98, but you are not gonna like the wood. If you are looking for a pretty gun, get the Stevens. If, like me, you don't give a sh!t how something looks as long as it shoots well and is reliable, then you'll be happy.

I'd also pick a Stevens 200, these rifles are incredibly accurate!
I NEVER thought I would ever see this. The stevens 200 has a lot of good stuff going for it, but good looks is not one of them. A rough hewn 2x4, wittled into a stock is nicer looking than that fugly grey plastic
That's why they make paint. The stevens are very accurate. I drove 4 hours to handle a zastava 98 in 375hh and didn't like the feel and the iron sights were the worst I've ever seen. I'd go with the stevens if you want a gun to go. To me the z98 needs modification
cheap 300 mag is an oxymoron- you may may not pay for it in terms of the rifle, but will absolutely drain you, even if you reload; 70-100 grains of powder PER ROUND , that only gives you roughly 100 rounds per pound; 4 or so reloads per case, due to bumpback( resetting the shoulder) only saving grace is you can use the same bullets as the 30 cals, which means you can buy in bulk- you also lose 2 rounds in the mag due to the belt- and you gain all of 25 -50 yards in mpbr- basically it's just an 06 on SPEED

I'd get the Stevens, only because I know the Savage guns. If you can find one at the right price and would appreciate a drop magazine, Savage makes package guns with a drop mag and they often sell for around $450.00. Some people find it useful.
Anyone that thinks either of these is prettier, needs better glasses...
prettier than the ZK wood stock in my opinion. Now, when Remington imported the Zastava actions and THREW AWAY the stocks, they replaced them with VERY NICE wood that makes the whole combo pretty. I love the stock on my 799, it is a very nice piece of wood.

Too bad you missed mine on the EE last week for $270 shipped, Stevens 200 in 300WM. It's a very functional gun, if you're looking for a tool, that's an ideal gun. It's ain't pretty, but it'll do what you ask it to.
If your gonna eventually use it as a base for a 338 then get the stevens, as switching the barrel is a doddle. If your gonna leave it as it is then get either the stevens, a savage package gun or the zavasta (sounds so much nicer spelt like that), whichever you like best.
i've got a 300mag savage.. it shoots nice and straight ! for a cheepy gun, it does surprisingly well
BUT .... it weighs 6 1/2 lbs... kicks like a damn rhino
so becareful of that and get a gun with some weight...
Take the lead strap wieghts you use on your duck decoys. JB weld a couple into the forestock. Also add them to the butt stock and hold in place with that squirty insulation for easy removal later, should you require it. You can easily add 3lbs or more to the weight of the stock. It'l still kick like a bastard though.
EDIT: if you are gonna put a heavy barrel on later and still use the standard stock, Do not put lead in the forestock. The balance will be very nose heavy but ok for a bipod.
