Hey guys, have a favor to ask~I have a daughter who is a really keen shooter, mostly outdoors...plinking offhand in the colder weather. She uses, and enjoys my scoped backpacker, but being a young shooter I supervise only. She's at the point where we could shoot together, but I'd prefer to have her with a single shot if we're doing that. Short story long, I've always been looking for an excuse to pick-up a Cooey 75 and MAN, I've seen some nice examples come-up for sale on the EE from time to time.

I'd love to see some photos of your 75s, or even hear from you if this was your first...or your kid's first .22. I've purchased 3 rifles in the last 12 months already....so I'm on lock-down when it comes to considering another any time soon. :) If you are considering selling yours, and it is in nice condition and/or has some great wood, PM me with some photos and a price. I'm sure my wife will understand.... :rolleyes:
 
There is a sticky thread on redone cooey;s here in the rimfire section that's really worthwhile checking out. Some really nice work by some our fellow CGN'rs.

I have pics in there on a model 60 and a 75 that I redid.
 
I never tire of the Cooey threads!

I've owned a few different single shots...My personal favourite (so far....) is the 'ol Cooey 75. I actually am the proud owner of 2. Just got a much nicer one (compared) than my original. I haven't tried my "new" one thoroughly yet but, my first one is probably the most accurate .22 I've ever owned. I have no doubts the second will shoot every bit as well. There was a day (within my limited span 'o life) where a Cooey was tucked away in almost every home here. Either over the door or, close to it. No fear of home invaders...more for pest control.

I also owned a model 39..same as the 75 but, a shorter barrel. I regret selling it...depending on your daughter's pref, she may do well with a 39. Easier for a wee-one to handle it. They are abundant and, seem to be "climbing" in the EE price wise.

The only draw back (if it is one...) is optics mounting. You can certainly get bases attached to a 39/75 but, it likely costs as much (or more) than the base rifle. I do like scopes on my .22's but, have no issues with open sights...Only in the last couple years have I really tried pushing the .22 out to 200yds...makes it pretty interesting!

They are what they are... Simple, cheap and, reliable...Great for teaching new shooters as, working the bolt doesn't actually "####" the action. Pretty tough to find much to complain about them.

My first 22 was a Cooey model 75. I was around 12 or 13 and out with my Uncle visiting a property he rented out to another farmer. The farmer asked me what kind of 22 I had. I told him I didn't have one. He then went into his closet and pulled out the Model 75 and said "here, take this, every boy should have a 22". It was a fine shooting gun, aside from the worn out bolt that caused the odd misfire or spit back.

I used that pic as, it's the only one I have in my photobucket that shows a whale belly. Will try to snap some pictures of the second.

...don't suppose you have a [whale bellied] '75 pic floatin' around?

What I meant was that second pic you provided is my Cooey Eatons Ranger. It is the same as a 75 only with a shorter barrel. The picture of the 82 is also my gun. Not being the mannlicher version, it is basically the same as a model 78, which is basically the same as a 75 only it has a peep sight and front target sight. From what I understand, the model 78 with peep and target sight was discontinued in about 1942 and I guess it became the model 82 which could be had like the one shown or with full length stock. Some had rear peep sights and some did not.
 
Well, this isn't my Cooey per-se, but it is my sons first rifle. (Actually, it was my first Cooey, for 2 months before he claimed it!!) I cut down the stock, cut down the barrel and re-crowned the muzzle, added the scope rail from my 22/45 and put on a cheapo red-dot. He loves it and will ring the gong at 25m and 50m all day long.

This alst shot shows a scope we tried but he didn't like.
 
Pretty sharp lookin' rifle spacesaver.

What do you utilize to secure the base? Rear sight screw? What else? I like the idea of the 'ol Bushnell (dovetailed scope bottom) as you could use a "forward" base but, still get good eye relief with the scope way back.

I don't blame your son for staking a claim on it!
 
Let me just say, sniperelites little rifle is actually WAY nicer than mine!!
Camster, I used J B weld to attach the scope base which was from my 22/45. YES it does hold and, if you've ever seen the knocks and bumps that a 6 year old can occaisionally give a rifle, you'll see that its doing just fine!;)
With any luck, these two will account for more than a few gophers in the next week or so.
