LMT MWS .308 Review & Pics

The LMT MWS .308 18" and 20" "STAINLESS STEEL 1:11.25 TWIST TACTICALLY FLAT MATTE BLACKENED BARREL ASSEMBLY" are out and available. LMT has them in stock and Questar has them on their website now. Here's a pic of a 20" from another forum. Drool....I predict a lot more over time in my immediate future.

Question to the Smith's out there:

I have a spare 16" MWS CL barrel, that I was gonna play with by cutting it down, or milling it down to fit a Surefire Brake. Are there any suggestions as to short barrel length, or smithing I could do to this barrel, that would not affect the accuracy much, or should I just leave it as is? Also, are there any Smith's out there would build a SS match barrel for the MWS using the extension and gas block from this barrel? Just curious. (It is also for sale right now on the EE, but I might keep it).

Finally got my MWS out on the 30th. As shown, the 16" barrel can easily group just under 1" with match ammo (I am not a great shot).

The dispersion of the groups is due to me playing with the windage and elevation adjustments on the Elcan between groups.

Before the anti-Elcan chorus begins let me say that I am not constrained in my choices of optics and would be hard pressed to find a reason to switch out the 1.5-6x to something else.

Bottom line: Accuracy, build quality and ergos make the MWS by far my favourite 7.62 NATO rifle.

I found the Lapua 167gr BTHP to be quite accurate inside 500m from my SR-25EMC, however past that it really did not do well, and from my other experiences with the Lapua 170gr and 185gr LockBase rounds I was not overly impressed with their accuracy.

However Black-Hills 175gr SMK loading I have found to be more accurate than any of the Lapua ammunitions, as well from what I have seen from the LMT MWS it likes M118LR and the BH loading as well - at least in the SS barrel, but when I was at a Foreign SASS competition the MWS did pretty well with the Lapua at least to the 500m point.

I found the Lapua 167 grainers to be consistent and relatively accurate through my 16" CL, however the FGMM, both 168's and 175's tends to shoot a little tighter through my gun. At least 1/4 to 1/2" depending on the day.

Here is my latest configuration and a few 100 yd groups I shot today with 168 gr. Norma Match. I'm fairly certain I could obtain consistent 1/2 MOA groups with the right hand load. Once I get done working up my bolt gun, I'll start loading for the MWS. All the groups shown are 5 round, with one of the groups having a flyer, which I pulled, due to the guy firing next to me. I'm still in love with my MWS :).

New stuff:

- Nightforce 2.5-10x24
- Surefire Brake (Barrel had to be turned down a bit for fitting)
- Magpul UBR (Required a Spikes Heavy CAR-10 buffer and custom spring to work)
- Accu-Shot V8 Bipod
- Magpul MIAD grip wedge

We need specifics on the load, ####!

I was going to pull the trigger on the purchase of a 20" ss barrel, but for the $1000 asking price, decided on a whole new gun instead.

Whole new gun? Did you buy the 16" SS MWS model? I am also considering a 18", or 20" SS barrel for Questar, but $1000 is a lot to stomach, especially when my 16" CL is shooting acceptably well. As for the load, it's factory 168 Gr Norma Match. Exactly like this stuff:
