Triple duty round?

yaaa its kinda that stupid. i guess the idea is that 270 and under don't go that far or something.
From the Ontario hunting regulations, the restriction applies to using centrefire rifles while hunting small game, not for deer (other than other restrictions listed on their table.
Therefore, a multi-purpose rifle would have to be a .270 or smaller (7mm is too large) as it would be used for small game.

A person hunting small game may not carry or use a
rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a
muzzle-loading gun, in the geograhic areas of of Brant,
Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton,
Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk,
Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo,
Wellington or York.

So from this we all now know that the .280REM is more powerful [shoots further, penetrates deeper, and is in all ways more deadly] than the .270WIN.

Debate OVER! :p

My choices are 7mm-08 Rem (practical) or 270 WSM (powerful)

Are you sure that you don't want to hung large game?
In that case, you should go the way of the .270"/7mm!

With the proper bullet, all of these cartridges are superb at all 3 tasks:
  • 243 Win (+short action -large game)
  • 270 Win (-long action +large game)
  • 270 WSM (+short action +extended range +large game)
  • 270 Weatherby Magnum (-long action +extended range +large game)
  • 7mm-08 Rem (+short action +large game)
  • 280 Rem (-long action +large game)
  • 7 Rem Mag (-long action +extended range +large game)

I short, 243 Win is best for medium game only, 7mm-08 is the practical all-rounder and 270WSM is the long distance all-rounder.
I own both the medium game only solution (243 Win) and the long distance all-rounder (270 WSM).

Have to add me as a 243 advocate.

I load up a 70 gr for 'yotes and other varmints and the 100's for deer. It really is a fantastic round for that size of game. The 308 is ok too, but the performance of that round is not as good.

A 70 grainer (not loaded to the nuts) only drops about 4 or 5" at 300 yards in my rifle (Savage model 10). That's pretty damn sweet for 'yotes. :D

Not to be a #### but by your logic the 32 special and 357/38 special lever guns are also more powerful and dangerous then the 270 and should be included in with the 280 rem? Its a stupid law that makes no sense. Yes I'm glad there's not suppose to be someone hunting with a 300 ulta mag on my property as there are houses and the 401 close but a 270 wby can reach out a long way to and is legal

I'd go .270 on the off chance that you will hunt moose or bear. 130 gr factory offering is perfect medicine for the chucks, yotes, deer and move to the 150's for moose and bear.

HA

The beauty of the 243 is that a small person or a lady will be able to shoot it without flinching for that 243 is ideal, my wife shot 2 mooses with her 243, both clean kill... JP.

250 Savage says I.

At first thought this question screams out for a .243 Winchester in the reply. This cartridge will do all three, but the Deer would be its weaker link. But when you said you don't care about overkill and recoil on the gophers, than what Wrongway suggested may be your absolute best choice. A .308Winchester. It will Quartet duty even for moose. Like a writer said many years ago, "The .308Winchester, Does it all"
Lots of bullet types and weights from cheapo to premium. Is there a more go to round in canada?:canadaFlag:

hahaha nothing over .270? who is the total moron who made that rule and what is their reasoning?

The rule probably created so that Toronto area hunters would not use 300 H & H Mag and 375 H & H Mag to hunt deer in 1932 ;)
In New Jersey USA, there are many areas where deer can only be hunted with a shotgun... So I guess that the 270 Rule is pretty lenient.
