7mm-08 Vs 7x57 Mauser

well, it's now 6/6/11. I ended up buying a new Sako A7 in 7mm-08 and a real nice used Browning Micro Medallion in 7mm-08, (Bogie bought that one at the gun auction in B.C. for me), love them both, dearly (no, not Bogie, the guns - the guns), Bogie gets a pat on the back! Still have my eye on my oldest son's Ruger No.1 AB in 7x57 (rare, indeed). He won't sell it to me, but he will let me use it, bless his heart! Still keeping and eye open for a nice 7x57 bolt action with removeable magazine, if such exists! The Micro took a nice Buck last Fall (75ish yard head shot, by youngest son). Oh yeah, I forgot I have a BLR in 7mm-08, as well. But she's not the best shooter in town! Will have to work with Kelly's info and see if I can smarten her up! Thanks for all the replies, great reading!

Should have been a poll. The two are so close in everything but coolness that you might as well let the masses decide for you. But, sadly, if you want a new factory rifle you're nearly stuck with the 7mm-08, although there is a nifty Manliccher stoked version from Ruger in the 7x57.

Enjoy the agonizing.

If you remain patient a 7X57 will come along. I was patient and ended up with a really nice Savage in 7X57 and it is unreal cool. I was glad I waited for teh right rifle to come along.

I think the only downside here is the availability of rifles with 7x57 chambering, not as many modern rifles available which will limit load pressure if you do find an older rifle. The loading manuals do compensate for this with lighter loads in the 7x57 than the 7mm-08. If you can get a modern , strong action in 7x57 the difference will be minuscule.

To me pick the rifle that feels the best and hope it comes in either of the two.

You want to add extra cool to the 7x57, there is a possiblity of a #1 being built labelled as 275rigby being worked thru also. Haven't heard what barrel is being considered yet, 24 or 26 would be great. I asked the vendor about it at Easter, he said it looked like a good chance to happen. Prophet River.

This seems to be yet another case where some are fooled into thinking that nothing old can be as good as something new. The 7X57 will drive a 140 gr bullet at 2900, just like the 7-08, and a 140 TTSX at 2900 is a dandy moose load. If you prefer to load long/heavy bullets, the longer case of the 7X57 will loose less powder capacity than the squat 7-08. On the other hand, if you find yourself in need of a true short action rifle the 7-08 has the edge and if you want more velocity with heavy bullets the correct choice is to move to a .280 Remington or a 7 mag. In this respect the 7X57 looses out as it doesn't have the capacity to compete with the large cartridges and isn't short enough to compete with the 7-08. But if you have an old Mauser, Brno, or some such thunder stick, you aren't at any disadvantage with a 7X57 as your general purpose rifle cartridge over any newer cartridge. Few of our upstart cartridges can account for the variety of game attributed to the 7X57.

Stunning photo their Boomer.
What ever that backstop is, you managed to blend the colors in
nicely for a sharp contrast.
Wish I knew how to do this sort of thing.

The only reason the 7x57 is underloaded by the American ammo companies is the availability of old 2 lug Mausers in that calibre(1893 etc.) Any 98 action is lots strong enough for full power loads. If you don't handload you should go with the 7-08 but if you do, I would spring for a 7x57.

You're giving me too much credit, the colors worked out by fluke, but thanks for the compliment. The hide is a wildebeest. This is one I took, most of the pics I'm able to post are thanks to my wife's efforts.

I'm not a fan of the 7x57 because the case specs show it to be very loose in the neck of most chambers.
The best thing you can do with one (IMHO) is run a 280 reamer into it :)
It will leave a little bulge around the base of the neck, of the case upon fireing (because of the loose neck dia) but case doesn't seem to suffer from it. My rifle had the barrel set back one thread so bulge is minimum length. It improved accuracy 100% in my rifle.

Ok you 7x57 lovers flame away, I got my umbrella up :D
