Moving to NB what Rifle to buy

Your hunting in NB would be much the same as here in NS. A nice medium power scope(3x-9x 3.5-10), bolt in .270Win/.30-06/7mmRemMag, and a short, fast handling "low power scoped"(1.5-4.5,2x-7x) carbine in say .308Winchester, would cover all your bases. Two rifles mentioned I know, but it gives you the tree stand hunt in the morning and evening glassing that powerline or big chopping, and something to still hunt and scout sign with during the day. It also gives you the moose choice should you be lucky to draw that one.Trust me it works.

The .270win will also double as an excellent Coyote rifle throughout the winter months as my Winchester XTR FWT in .270 does for me. I used hornady interlocks of 100grs @ 3360fps. Nice coyote stopper and very accurate in mine. Now I shoot whatever I have zeroed for deer during coyote season, just add the winter camo.

I'm thinking of moving, just locally, because of parking issues. Does this mean I get to buy another rifle, or do you have to change provinces?

I'd tell someone moving to NB to make sure they had a .22 centerfire, a 12 gauge shotgun, and a .22 lr. Anything else is gravy - a .30-cal deer rifle is a good idea, but there are plenty of spots to hunt whitetails with a shotgun if you want to, and more and more guys are using the .22-cal centerfires thanks to our stupid caliber restrictions. In my opinion, having more than one deer rifle here is sort of a waste of time, since our hunting season is so short (but if you are a range shooter, fill your boots - otherwise you won't be using that .30-06 or .303 or whatever very much).

local move ?

You qualify for a mental health / morale purchace of a firearm of your choice. If you are moving with a girlfriend or wife, increase the value by 100.00. If its with wife and kids 200.00, and if your wife is pregnant during the move ( god help you) add 300.00.

The deer season here is four weeks long which I don't think is particularly short. But I'm not that familiar with regs in other provinces that have huntable deer populations. How long are the deer seasons in other provinces? Of course here in N.B. if you are a "status Indian", you can hunt all year round and kill as many animals as you want. We can thank our BONEHEAD JUDICIARY for that one. N.B. Indian bands even refuse to tell DNR how many moose and deer they kill so they can assess the impact on populations. I have personal knowledge of more than a few guys who brag about killing 15 or 20 moose every fall, truly sickening.

Not in NB it won't. You can only use a .22-cal or less (centerfire or rimfire, doesn't matter) during varmint season. Once your deer, bear, or moose tag is used, or the season is over, you can't use anything larger than birdshot in a shotgun, or a .22 cal rifle.

Scoped 30-30(if you draw a moose tag you have an excuse to buy a new rifle because it is sort of a celebration),16 gauge (grouse, bunnies and crows)and a varmint rifle. 223,22 hornet, etc.(groundhogs, crows , coyotes).

Hard for me to suggest such a small selection being I own quite an array of arms but here it goes...
22-250 or 223....12 or 20ga...270,308 or 30-06...and a rimfire of your choice!
;)

Good Luck w/ The Move, And if your ever down in the Miramichi area let me know!

P.S.
Why Edmundston if you dont mind me asking? Work??

Ok thanks on that. We are blessed here I guess being able to use any caliber for Coyote throughout the winter. I always thought NB was same. I stand corrected.
I see why my littel Sako A1 in .222Rem was wissed off to NB then, for Coyote!:)

You can use a .22 Hornet to hunt deer in NB but you can't use anything bigger that a .22 centerfire to hunt coyotes after deer season.

:confused::confused::confused:

Because you might use a bigger rifle to poach a deer?

NB has some stupid laws!

It's looking like we will have crossbows added to that this fall.;):)

Crossbows will be legal in NB after Sept. 1, but you cannot use them during the bow season for deer. Looks like it will be fine for the bow season for bears in the fall.

I like short handy rifles for the woods in the maritimes. Any good lever action will serve you well or compact .308/7mm08. Long action rifles like the 30-06 are too heavy to lug around for the performance gained, imo. Most deer are shot well under 100 yards. The same for bears. Even most moose are taken at very close range.

On the other hand, if you get a kick out of hunting with a .458 or the latest magnum on the market but all means do it. It is all about having a good time in the end.
