223 .. looking for advice

I would step up to 243 bolt for yotes. "My" belief is that you would have a better chance at clean one shot kills. But, that's just my thoughts. I don't like to see pain and suffering. I know the 223 works for some guys, but me personally, would not use it for yotes.

a 55g pill from a .223 will kill any yote on the spot at 400 yards or less with a boiler room shot. Might be less margin for error with a .223 over a .243, but to say they aren't good for yotes is crazy. I've shot a dozen or so yotes with my .223 and maybe two have run 40-75 yards before piling up? and the shot was a bit far back. Never lost one yet KNOCK ON WOOD.

in fact i've had more runners with my .22-250 than .223. Not sure why, it will punch a hole the size of my fist with 55g v-max but had a couple run into the bush before expiring.

.243 can be harder on pelts too, .223 leaves nice little holes.

If I had to go with a 243 I would just load a 110gr in my 308 and run that. Still my CZ527 223 is a slick little critter and spits 55gr a looonnnnnggg way out there. I like the 223 a lot for varmint and wish I had one when I was a young un.

Sorry to hijack a little, I wonder if you could define 'very accurate'? I had an older one a few years ago and wasn't impressed with accuracy. Would you say the newer 580+ series would do MOA or under 2" at 100yards?

I'm thinking of a new semi in .223 and would consider another Mini if performance is better.

Thanks

I can shoot one inch all day long... with a few 3/4 inch groups... using an 8 power scope.

I found the sheet with my group on it. Yes, it really is the worst scan job in the world. The group is printed on the very top edge of the page. Yes, it looks goofy, but my scanner only picked up the top ribbon of the page. I cut out the group itself and I'm not sure if it'll show up well enough. I used Windows paint to black out the rest of the frame, it won't let me black out the holes so I gave up on that. This is 3 shots at 50 yards with an H & R handi-rifle Varmint using Winchester 45 grain factory loaded bulk hollowpoint ammunition. 0.202 inches center to center. It'll do the job just fine for me. :)

They cheapest semi-auto that can shoot is the Ruger Mini-14 Target.
I've own a Mini-14 and this model is a good, reliable and accurate rifle but I don't like Mini-14 and the M14. (It's just me don't try to figure it out)
AR-15 can be extremely accurate but are restricted, so no hunting.

There are other alternative but they're very expensive (XCR-L and Swiss Arms Green rifle).

I have to disagree with the Mini Target statements. I got rid of mine because it did not live up to all the hype. Look carefully at it...it does NOT have a heavy barrel. I traded it for a Remy Varmint SPS, and have never looked back.

I also bought a Mini Ranch. It averages about 1.25" to 1.5" at 100 yards. It loves 50 gr noslers, but the shots will wander (right and up - 45 degrees) after fourth shot of quick repeating and barrel heats up.

As for the 223, ya it will reach easily out to 300 yards, but it also drops a bit quickly too. I use my 243 for most 'yotes in open fields as it is still relatively flat at that range.

Gee, I don't believe I said they were no good on Yotes! I just said that I, (me, myself) (no one else mentioned) would not use 223 and would use 243 instead. Hope that clears it up!

did you write this backwards?
" Might be less margin for error with a .223 over a .243, but"

I hope so! Less margin for error, is why I (me, myself) would use a 243 instead. I stand to be corrected, I could be all wet, but untill then, I will use my 243 and 6mm.

Call me weak hearted or whatever you like, but this is the kind of stuff I don't care for:

"with my .223 and maybe two have run 40-75 yards before piling up? and the shot was a bit far back."

"in fact i've had more runners with my .22-250"

"had a couple run into the bush before expiring."

Hey, bogie. Try those 110's in your 308, I've been told by a few shooters that they aren't very accurate. That's why I went with that latest rifle in 6mm, instead of using my 308 with 110's. I know you have a world of patience to work on it and you love doing it! Let me know, mon!

I got a stevens 200 in .223 for yotes, and a keltec su16 on order as well.
I'd like to upgrade from the stevens to another howa ranchland but in .223, this one is for deer in 308win:
