With a quality rifle like that it often takes good match ammo to bring out the best, for shooting groups I'd try Eley, lapua, Wolf, R-55 or Fed. GM.

thanks Ben, but can ammo make that big of a differance, and is this as good as it gets for federal??

So I was taking a shower and enjoying a cookie...

Always try different brands of ammo, they can make a huge difference. For the most part, I have found bulk packs (no matter what brand) to be inconsistent at best. Try some Eley Club, Target or other high grade ammo... it does make a difference.

Just tossing this out there:
I found Winchester Super X Power Point, product code X22LRPP to be very accurate as far as rimfire ammunition goes.
I even found it rivalled for 100-200 yard groups to outshoot some so called 22 match ammo from big name companies. Outshot Federal & Remington match no problem. Almost equaled Eley red box.
The best I believe are Eley black box, Lapua Standard Club and SK Standard Plus. Center X if you have deeper pockets.

"...can ammo make that big of a difference..." Hi. Yep. With any .22 you have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. The price of it means nothing.
You shooting off a solid rest? What poundage is the trigger set at? What sights?
You have some excellent groups, but the inconsistency is most like you.

go get some good quality ammo as suggested above. You will be surprised at the difference it makes when shooting groups.

I shot bulk ammo and cheaper stuff for awhile and once I used some match ammo, I've never purchased bulk ammo since. In fact, I have a large amount of bulk ammo kicking around that I won't even bother shooting. Try some SK ammo, they make SK standard plus and SK rifle match which are fairly cheap and tend to shoot good in a variety of guns.

Oh by the way, what sight are you using (open, scope, adjustable parallax, etc)

x14 for trying different ammo. I've got an old Cooey that bespises any "good" ammo ... feed it the bulk $3/box of 50 stuff though and it'll kill nickels @ 50 yards all day long.

Looking at your groupings, they look fairly decent for the ammo you are using, but I also see some apparent "fliers" ... have you got a small finch? holding your breath? are you using a good rest/bag?

FOr the most part though, I'd say you need to go drop a few dollors and get a box of every type of Ammo your local canadian tire has in stock and try them all. You will be surprised at the difference in them. The rounds that you don't like ... well ... they are good for killing pop cans and whatnot when you are plinking :D

It's probably ammo related but...

1) Did you properly break in and "season" your barrel?

2) What type of rest are you using?

2) Run us through your shooting routine. I mean from the moment you first look through your scope until the time you touch off a round. I'm a terrible shooter myself but I'd be interested to hear it.

I'd agree with the above guys talking about ammo. Just because you have match ammo doesn't mean your gun will like it. i have an old CIL made by Anchutz and what it like is Federal Bulk Packs and it will shoot nickels all day long if I do my part.

how is your trigger? tell me more about it.

Is your cheek resting on the same spot on your stock each time?

even cheap ammo has more consistancy. There are a few small factors at play, tighten them up and you will see great improvements.

Ammunition can be a huge factor. My Cooper 22lr averages around .400" for five shots at 50 yards with SK Standard Plus, but with Midas, the groups are about half of that. With cheap bulk loads, the groups average around 3/4".
I use the Standard Plus in that rifle, because I just won't pay the price to shoot the Midas loads, but I want better accuracy, than the bulk loads provide.

I am using the same SK Standard Plus in my Anschutz 54 match, and with aperture sights, I have put nine shots into 5/8" at 50 yards. With a scope, I have no doubt that I could do much better.

accurate guns are interesting but then you can't blame the gun:redface:

thanks for the advice :)
