30 30 ammo !! ??? what to choose ?? first time rifle

If,in your travels, you find yourself near a Walmart pick some up there. Winchester Super X was $14.95 last time I was in the store here. Killer deal and they had lots.

Was just in the Airdrie Wally World (a bit closer to savagefan's location) and Winchester Super-X 30-30 was $17.XX/box. I didn't stop to look at which bullet weight it was.

Why are 170s better than the 150s in this caliber :?:

SC.....................
Actually the heavier 170gr. bullet penetrates deeper than the 150 gr. due to it's higher sectional density (SD) . This appleies to all caliber bullets (rule of thumb is the longer and heavier the bullet the deeper it penetrates due to higher SD). That's why some smaller calibers are suitable for deer and marginally for moose (which aren't as hard to put down as elk as long as your shot is fairly broadside, well-placed into the vital heart/lung killing zone) . Proper shot placement is the most important factor in killing power, I use 150 gr. for most every big game as it penetrates sufficiently on medioum sized big-game as long as you're not trying to break heavy shoulder bones. The 150 gr. loads have been sufficient in killing power out to ranges near 200 yds. as I target fairly large mule deer and the occassional black bear (at closer range). . (never had any problem with penetration). Also the lighter 150gr. loads are m,ore pleasant to shoot as the recoil is less than the heavier 170 loads. If I was hunting for moose, elk and larger bear, I would certainly go with the 170's for deeper penetration into the vitals. If the 170's are more accurate in your rifle, stick with them ; likewsie for the 150's.

Also you might consider trying the fairly new Hornady's LeverEvolution loads with a hot proprietary powder loading and a pointed/spire point bullet with a soft elastomeric tip which was specifically designed f to be safely used in the tubular magazines of lever action rifles. Shoots harder and flatter and extends the killing power out to 250yds.!! on well-placed shots, but is more expensive. Good luck.

You live in Toronto, your going to spend a grand on a moose hunt. Buy a rifle more suited to moose hunting. Enfield No.5 will more than meet your needs. There's enough decent used 308's and 30-06 out there as well to choose from, keeping your costs down.

Dead deer can't tell whether it was a 150 gr or a 170 gr that smacked it. The 94 is my favorite deer rifle.

\Oh, the ole' 303brit has about the same ballistics as a .356 Win. Lot's of knock down power. She doesn't have to be pretty to do the job. Good bore, tight, good magazine. You can drag it through hell and back and it'll still shoot.
Mac_63 has a nice 303 in the EE by the way.

Dug out my very first gun a Marlin 30-30 and slammed in some lever evolution. 5 shots to 1.5 inches with fixed 4 power scope and a heavy trigger. Put it back in the safe and its ready for the kids!

All this talk about new bullets (read expensive) and 250 yd. shots, how many have shot well at 250 yds. with an iron sighted model '94. I'd use the heaviest flat point you can and limit your shots to say 150 yds., a distance you can hit something. Magnificent game animals deserve your best efforts to ensure a clean kill.

Ah shucks, Ben. You downright spoiled all my anticipation of how I was going to get some of them dang fangled lever-em-in-voluted ammunition, put one in my old Winny and kill that buck that shows up in the far field.
Already had the story figured out fer puttin in that nutty thing everybody reads.
The advertisin never said nothin about iron sights or havin to hit them.

Don't go getting all realistic and practical on us, Ben.

When I developed a load and sighted my Garand in for hunting last year, I zeroed it at 200yds because that was the farthest I could ever see taking a shot with iron sights. There was no point in zeroing for maximum point blank range since I knew I would never attempt a shot at that range anyway.

this post made me pick my 30-30 out of the safe this afternoon.
i tried the same blue box 170 gr soft point round nose load from federal.
but this was my first try with this ammo with open sight, as i use a scope to try loads.
i was shooting on sand bags, and i was impressed when i got to the target to say the least. my best group with the rifle so far, scoped or not.

1.400"- 0.308"= 1.092"

It's not about how far..it's about what is left when the bullet gets there.

I use 170 grn of just about any brand that is on the shelf and have never noticed any great difference. I have taken tons of deer, moose, bear, and all work if you put them in the right place.
