Have you chronographed them in your Rifle colin?

Has anyone else chrony'd these new load offerings to verify real world performance? I don't remember seeing any videos demonstrating them in actual lever guns yet.

If and when I get another .30-30Win, I will look hard at these premiums to freshen up the venerable cartridge.:canadaFlag:

As I posted many moons ago, in another .30-30 thread...yes, there have been others...
I used to load 165SP Hornady's in my Dad's Mod 94. I only ever carried two rounds. I mean, how many do you need to shoot a deer?
No chrony in those days though, so I can't tell you what I was getting and due to several moves and a flood in the basement, most of my records don't even exist, but I can tell you that the deer never went more than 20 yds and one shot at 200yds dropped right there. Somehow, my Father shot it in the head.

We jokingly told him that the deer felt bad since it was so late in the season and he was the only one without a deer that it saw the bullet coming and jumped in front of it!!

The moose also didn't go too far, but we kept moose shots down below 100yds whenever we could.

I know the OP does not reload and I know that my father still has part boxes of Dominion 170gn bulllets he has never fired,

Silver tip 170's have always worked very very well for me, 150's were inaccurate for me (maybe just cuz I didn't wanna use 'em). gonna try the Honady leverevalusion (or whatever that dam word is).

I like Leverevolution, very happy with the factory load but expensive. Got the components and will compare my reloads. I only use it for deer in the tighter bush. I know lots of moose have been dropped with these things but there are better options, every step a wounded moose takes is dragging distance for the hunter if he finds it. I'm booking off for a 1 week moose hunt this fall so I picked up a .338 winmag (Savage natch) gotta have confidence in your tools.

If I remember right, the Hornady loads are out of a 24" barrel. A 24" .30-30 is rare at best. I chronied them when they first came out and they were a little faster, but I don't think the deer, moose, etc. will know the difference from that and my Winchester 170 ST's.

The 170 gr. soft pts. or silvertips provide good penetration with expansion, and have for 100 + years, I don't see how that can be improved on with anything new, it's just advertising hype. A heavier flat pt. might be the only way to improve the old 30/30 on game the size of moose.

Ben, the Hornady are actually pointed with a hard rubber tip. With higher velocities. The power will diminish less over the flight of the bullet due to it's higher ballistic co-efficient. Also the flight path (drop) of the bullet is on par with a 300 win mag power point out to 300 yards. I think it will turn a 0-100 yard gun into a 0-200 yard gun. If you can believe the numbers.

I've shot alot of deer with 308 and 30-06. I've used a bow just once myself, and helped buddies clean slug shot deer. The time I used 30-30 with 150 grain Silvertip was quite a learning experience I tell you guys.
The one shot to the chest did wicked bad damage. The front of the tenderloins were mushroomed from expanding lead from the front of the bullet. Both lungs were smashed and the heart half destroyed to a bloody jelly. I recovered the copper jacket weighing only 77 grains just under the opposite hide.
Does anyone else notice the uncanny amount of damage done with the winchester silvertip? I think it's about the most deadly deer bullet myself, if you can place it where it counts at the right range.

Hornady Leverevolution loads are great in the 30-30, giving a real advantage to the 150grainers because they don't slow down so fast. Leverevolutions also have better weight retention and penetration than SP or JHP offerings. I've shot them out of a top-eject Winchester 94 and they got groups that were standard for me, and feeding wasn't an issue. For hunting I'd say they're the way to go.

What price are you buying Hornady Leverevolution for your 30/30 at that you call expensive?
I get mine for $20.00/ box. Hell of a lot cheaper than shooting the standard calibres. IMO, the Leverevolution is a much more effective round than the ballistic sliver tip everyone is talking about in this thread. Very cost effevtive round. Just my 2 pennies

I paid $36 a box from Basspro last fall. Where are you getting yours?

Thanx, but that would be a wagon load of gas from here. I do notice WSS lists them for $24, whether they have them or not is another matter, I have leverevolution powder FTX bullets and brass so I'm good to go now

30-30

If,in your travels, you find yourself near a Walmart pick some up there. Winchester Super X was $14.95 last time I was in the store here. Killer deal and they had lots.
