UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

We should get a bunch of us who don't need the spin cocking levers together and re design a mid size loop and then send them to a fabricator to be cut, shaped, welded.

I bet it wouldn't cost to much if the shop was doing a bunch at the same time?

I might even try and do as much as I can myself and then get someone to weld it for me.

I like the shape and size of the Henry .22 mare's leg's lever.

the hardest part of cutting and reshaping the lever is rebluing it and matching the colour to the rest of the rifle .
actually reshaping it is cake if a person has any fabrication experience .

I'm not to worried about the lever matching perfectly with the gun's bluing.

sorry to bother you again Gary, but do we need to send our gun in to get these holsters you mentioned made? or do they have something already figured out?

Thanks again,

J

I'm too lazy to get out the rulebook, and I'd hate to be one of those 'self defeaters' or whatever CGN'rs call them these days, but I think any stock mods (longer/shorter) on something like this are uber taboo, non? <setting flame suppresion to max>. Quick, somebody make it official :)

edit: and by 'taboo', I'm using massive amounts of government flavoured sarcasm. I think the article and pics were cool.

I was wondering about that too. The way I read it (and I'm fully open to being corrected) is that you cannot modify a weapon to be less than 29" long. So if it starts at 24" and you make it 25" are you still legal??? What a screwy set of rules we have!!!

I too am wearing my Nomex underwear so flame away :D :D

a rifle needs to be 26 inches long ( barrel / action + stock )

these are just under 25 inches , but are still classified as unrestricted .

my take on this is , if you changed the stock to a longer one , make sure it is now OVER 26 inches .

who knows what sort of nightmare you might unleash on yourself if you changed the length to 25 inches . even though it is longer than factory , it is still under 26 inches .

What he said.
But if you put a full size stock on you'd be adding a lot more than two inches.
Also if you attach a folder, such as what they guy from Idaho did, to the existing stock, you'd still be OK.
These are unrestricted because they are manufactured to these dimensions, are intended to be fired with two hands, and are not semi-automatic.

does anyone know how to take these apart, eg. get the bolt out for cleaning and such. the manual tells absolutly nothing, and i didn't want to start removing screws with wreckless abandon. cannot find anything one the internet yet. I'm sure there are a few lever action pros out there. any help would be appreciated. btw I have the chiappa 44mag

You are absolutely correct. I read 26 and typed 29.

Also, you can't mod the barrel to less then 18.5" (470mm) so if you replace the 12" barrel with a cut down barrel that is say, 16" is that illegal as well?

from what i understand no one can not legally cut a barrel below (either 18 or 18.5 .....)

BUT

anyone who is a " manufacturer " can build a new ( shorter than 18 or 18.5 )barrel that you can install onto your rifle .

so a cut down barrel that is 16 inches is illegal , a new 12" barrel built by a person with the right paper work is legal .

for anyone reading this , for a non semiauto rifle ( ie bolt action / pump / lever ) is it 18 , or 18.5 inches the shortest a " regular "person can trim their barrels back to ?

if you do manage to get it apart , take a crap load of pictures and memorise where each screw goes and which side the locking plates came from and the direction they where facing .

it is like taking apart a diesel injection pump , or a old spring powered clock .

also invest in a set of high quality screw drivers so you don't bugger up the heads of the screws .

these actions aren't really ment to be taken apart , and the only time i have taken mine apart wasn't to clean it , but rather hone and polish the bearing surfaces and tweak the trigger .

if your getting your rifle so dirty you need to take the action apart to clean it , maybe you need to be more carefull with your rifle .

lets not jump to conclusions allready, I just like to know how to do it if I have to, and I'm pretty sure you don't start with screws on the receiver. I'm thinking mag tube must come off, then barrel, then bolt can come out from front end, but I'm not sure thats why I ask. If I want to get insulted right away I'll be a #### right off the bat.

i wasn't trying to be insulting ......

some rifles are made to easily be taken apart , this one isn't .

if you spend a bit of time with google there are some pictures of how to disassemble the 1892 action .

jiust found this , it might be better than pictures ;
