Custom 6xc range report video

Enjoyed Forsure !

I'm moving south to southern Alberta in 2weeks so it will be nice to see how the bullet bucks at long range under some strong winds.

When is the next time your going to be at homestead?

AKD, There are a couple of great matches in the fall... the Gil Hurst memorial is a Palma match (all 7,8,900M) and the Frost on the Pumkin is everything. I will try to be at both if hunting allows.

Longshot.... yep, at or near 39 grains of 4350 and as will all VLD's, stick em into the rifling.

The John Howard is the 7,8 and 900m match 2nd weekend in Sept (around the 11th I think).

The Gil Hurst is the Frost on the Pumpkin match at the end of Sept

The Dtac's are pretty close to a Sierra match king I find. Are your DTAC's the newer solid pointed nose ones? If so keep us updated on how they work. mine are the older hollow pointed type.

The ones I loaded up I had just touching the lands. If they act like all the other cal's ive tried SMK's in I think better results will come from a bit off the lands. .010-.020

Mine are the HPbt ones.I'm usually setting my 175 mks out .005 on my 308 so perhaps ill start there.
I'm also going to try coating mine with HBN.Hey any idea if modified OAL cases are availiable for this Cal?
I know Hornady will do a custom one but there anywhere you can just buy one?

I know what you mean. I have a hornady oal gauge as well. They work great.

One thing you can do is seat the bullet (in a non fired case) and use a marker to collour the bullet. Stick it in and you can see the land marks if it's jammed. Use minor adjustments until you feel it in the bolt and see no marks.

What kind of dies do u have?

Ryan,

Hold a bullet against the lands with something (I use the eraser end of a pencil) and put your cleaning rod down the tube until it contacts the bullet and mark your rod.

Pull the bullet out and close the bolt, put the cleaning rod down again and mark rod.

Measure between the 2 marks and then set your seater to load the dummy round a few thou longer. (I start with about .010) polish bullet with steel wool and chamber the dummy round.

Keep moving seater in small increments until you barely see marks on the bullet. Polish bullet between every chambering. When you get to the point where u see no marks, add .001 and that will be your at thge lands measurement.

No need for special cases or tools. :D

DTACs are essentially longer 107 SMKs that are also now pointed, if I'm not mistaken. Don't have Bryan's book with me, but I think it shows that they share the same nose profile.

Intresting.
Looking at some more info I know there made by Sierra.

David Tubb says Sierra has taken extra special care in making the DTAC .... Not to put down Sierra but ya right. I'm sure the smk's get the same lovin.

I would really like to try some of the new solid pointed dtac's. But think it's worth it?
Most of the history I see and have had bergers usually out beat the sierras.

Pointing that bullet will give you a pretty good gain in BC. The 117 gr. Matrix VLD is also a good candidate for pointing (meplat is huge!). The new pointed DTACs track with a BC of 0.590 in my Crusader. At, 3100 fps, they stay super out to 1500 yard easily. Both of those bullets should do better than the DTAC when pointed.

Listen to this man.
He knows bullets.

I have a Whidden pointing die(thanks Jerry) that i've been using to point my .308 bullets with.I do have a 6mm sleeve and now a .223 sleeve(thanks Jerry) to point with.I also use a Montour County meplat trimmer to even up the meplats.I know most guys don't but I love just sitting doing all this stuff with a rum a coke, listening to some tunes, so it can't hurt.If nothing else it makes me feel better. ;)
