M1918 bar ?

Looking into semi-automatic milsurp (and I use the term loosely) firearms that fire 30-06 to suplement the M1, I stumbled upon the Ohio Ordnance made M1918A3 BAR. Seeing as it is semi-auto and the barrel is greater than 18.5", is there a possibility of having these imported as a non-restricted firearm ? Has this been done in the past ? If so, were there any special considerations that I should be aware of ? Keep in mind that I have imported from the US in the past, just never a "milsurp". And not having seen one for sale in the Gun stores or on EE has piqued my curiosity further.

I searched through a few old threads and am still not clear on the answer. So without digging much further, I posting this query in the hope that perhaps someone may have already researched this possibility.

They don't have any shipping restrictions to Canada it appears:

I would try phoning them directly and then contact the CFC if they are willing to ship you one. Since they aren't F/A, or a converted auto, you might have a chance.

At $4K a rifle, I don't imagine they sell a whole bunch of them though.
 
I shot one of these in Montana..very accurate and a sweet heart to shoot.
Ten minutes later I shot it's grandpa...the M1918 BAR in full auto...yes, it was a WW1 era gun. It was a moving experience, especially when the entire mag of 20 rounds in three and four round bursts landed on an 18X24 steel plate at 80 yards

Good point and that did not even cross my mind. heh .. Can't hurt to give them a call. If this is allowed, maybe we could do a group buy and in addition to getting a discount, can maybe save on shipping and import paperwork costs! :p

Clay at Prophet River would be a good man to import them through if you get that far.
 
The original BAR fired from an open bolt, of course, same as just about every other LMG.

Does not the BATF insist that the A3 fire from a closed bolt?

I know they did that with the Thompsons.

I think the BATFE insisted most of the semi auto MG's be designed around it being closed bolt. Or at least that is one of the primary precautions the builders down south have been taking to ensure a smooth approval process. I wouldn't doubt that the ohio ord BAR does fire from closed bolt.

I personally am more interested in their semi 1917a1 WC!
 
It does fire off a closed bolt, and the trigger group is somewhat different (also the receiver will not accept a military trigger group).
 
So it's actually basically a lookalike. There is a world of difference between an 18-pound closed-bolt semi and an 18-pound open-bolt semi. The closed-bolt gun doesn't have that incredible LURCH when you pull the trigger.

Just mentioning this in case somebody gets one and then starts telling everybody about the INCREDIBLE ACCURACY of the BAR. (Might even put it 'way up there with the "sniper-like" accuracy of the BREN GUN, also an open-bolt LMG!)

Still, sound like a fun gun.

Just too bad we can't shoot the originals any more.

After all, this is SUPPOSED TO BE a FREE COUNTRY.

Isn't it?

IMHO, barring a few nitpicks (concealed carry, full auto etc) , our gun laws are among the most relaxed in the world with more deregulation on the horizon. In today's troubled times, I say that is a decent compromise considering the widespread fear mongering propagated by some factions.

Yes, Does this have an FRT #, anyone? I am really interested in getting one for sure. Does anybody know of someone that has one in canada allready?
An old guy at my range claims to have a friend in BC that has one (but i think its a CA). Imagine deer hunting with one :D
 
Yes, it does indeed have an FRT assigned to it.

44194-1, for those interested. Classified as a Non-Restricted.

And, since it was mentioned, their Browning 1928 Colt (FRT # 119312) is also classified Non-Restricted.
 
Back before the bureaucratic (not legislated) elimination of ATTs for the CAsovrec, it was a lot of fun to fire both the BAR, Thompson and the BREN single shot from an open bolt. Once you learned to compensate for the inertia of the bolt running forward and buggering the sight picture, you could be quite accurate on single shot-especially with the bipod on the BAR/BREN.

Hopefully we will see this changed at some point in time as there are a lot of fine CAs out there needing to be shot.
 
my vickers ,sten ,2 brens,mg34, mg42,stg44,1919A4,1919A6 really hope theres a change coming .....not to mention my C1A1

BTW Al Simmons in Hamilton brought one of those BAR's up from the states a few years back ..it was really well put together

I neglected to update this thread. Export paperwork has been submitted and the rifle has been ordered with walnut stock. Now the wait as I added quite a few goodies on the application and am not entirely sure some of them will fly. Hopefully it goes through. Will update as and when I receive it.
