I'm just editing my original post I've decided to put more money into it if needed, what would be a good field grade SxS or O/U, i don't want to spend 2,000$ on a gun i'll be bringing into the bush. What would be your recomendations for a good field grade gun.

I'd go for the Maverick. It would be new and at least you know its history. As for chokes, usually modified for steel shot and if your grouse are a little spooky and are flying off early. If they are close imp cyl would probably be better. Once you get it try a few shots at different ranges to see how it patterns with different loads.

I have both baikal sxs and mossberg pumps basically twin of maverick. I love my pumps but prefer the sxs for bird hunting. I have an ij58 f/m and love it. Its my normal skeet gun and really smokes the targets. I have used it on grouse and bunnies and pheasants and it has done well. I save the full for longer shots and have never really mangled any meat. The baikals are very sturdy well built gun. I've got over 10 000 rounds thru mine and never had an issue

I recently saw the Maverick Hunter O/U (only in a catalog). For $400 maybe worth looking into it. Anyone held this gun?

As long as it doesn't have the issues of the darn silver reserve O/U's, then maybe it sa good beater gun? Synthetic too!

As for the OP. My dad used ot own a Baikal back in Poland, SxS. He loved it (my uncle has it now).

I only use SxS or O/U for upland birds, since those buggers are fast, and you only really get one or two good shots anyway, so why bother pumping away through the rounds when you have those two shots right there, right?

However, I ALSO own an 870 supermag for geese and the pump isn't too bad. I am pretty fast with it...however, I am tempted to get an over/under for waterfowl now.

You can't use more than 3 shots anyway, and if you've missed by the first two, then you won't need the third LOL.

Its preference really.

HOWEVER, in the case of tradex used guns VS new Maverick, go for the mossy/maverick. YOU GET A WARRANTY!

Who sells the Cz prophet river does but have non? Now I have been looking at the franchi renaissance field and the citori satin hunter. What one would u guys think is a good field gun?

What gauge? What kind of game are you planning on hunting with the shotgun - Upland/Small Game only? Waterfowl as well?

Anyway, in the low price range.....

Baikal
SxS: MP43 models (formerly IZH-43)
O/U: MP27 models (formerly IZH-27)

CZ
SxS: Bobwhite (DT), Ringneck (SST)
O/U: Redhead, Canvasback

YILDIZ
SxS: Elegant models
O/U: SPZ models

A veriety of used guns on CGN.....there is a 12ga Ringneck in there....I would seriously consider the Merkel listed at the bottom. Regardless of the selection, the shotgun has to fit the individual.

Best of luck!

12g mostly upland birds, might do a bit of waterfowl so I would like at least 3" chambers. Ya the Cz is nice but I've heard some bad things also. And I was thinking a baikal but have heard lots of bad reviews.

The CZs and late model Baikals are all equipped with 3in chambers, screw-in chokes and compatible with non-tox (steel).

The Browning Upland Special or the Merkel would make good guns for Upland. The chokes may need to be opened up on the later. The Merkel will also need to be validated (by a smith) for compatibility with steel although I have a hunch that the gunsmith will likely ok that for such use.

Needless to mention, in the case of used firearms, validation of overall condition + fair price would be among the selection criteria.

Again, gun fit is the foremost component that one would have to look at carefully.

my gun shop up here only has condors and 1 franchi to see how they fit, so i basically just have to guess off those what i'm looking for for fit. also the baikals i've heard bad things about.

"heard some bad things"?
How about going onto shotgunworld.com and check out the Huglu forum!:)
I have owned several CZ guns and can tell you the "bad things" you heard were most likey from pre-2006 guns with brazed firing pins or form somebody who has never owned one.
I'd buy another in a heart beat if the proper one came around!
Don't write them off until you try one, that is the acid test for any shotgun!
That being said, there are a lot of nice Merkels and Brnos to be had at at Tradeex , and if you look around, you can sometimes find some real jewels on the exchange!:)

I use a new Browning Citori Field, so far its done well in the mud and the swamp.

Are Mossberg 500s and Rem. 870s now avail. in o/u and SxS? A used Browning BSS is the Bee,s knees, as I prefer a SxS for field use, I bought a used Zoli for $300(SxS), and I believe that the CZ line is good for anything but heavy target use. I've never owned one of those but they are nice to look at and made by Turkeys.
