Classic cartridges in the field

So, which fine old rifles, or new ones, chambered in the classic cartridges will be heading to the hunting grounds this year? Stories, as well as pictures, from past adventures will also be much appreciated!

Took my first deer two seasons ago with a BSA CF-2 in 6.5x55, as classic a cartridge as they come.

Last year I got a mulie doe with my Garand in 30-06:

This year will be the Garand again, my M38 Swede Mauser, a K31 and a Parker Hale No.4 Supreme sporter.

Nice M38 - and others too. Do you use factory ammo in the K31?

I have and use a .250-3000, a .257 Roberts, a pair of .30-30's, and my most "modern" chambering, a .280 Remington, a cartridge that was new in 1957!
The .250 Savage is what I hope to take my next deer or caribou with.

Thanks. I reload for all of them. GP11 ammo is too expensive for my taste, especially for an essentially non-reloadable case.

I hunted a few years with a Savage M99 in 300 Savage. An EG built in 1947, loved that rifle, but was sold because it didn't fit me right and I couldn't bring myself to alter it. It now has a new home.

It will likely serve you well. I am working on acquiring a vintage Brno small ring in 7x57 with a Nikon 6x.

I'm also be hunting with a nice FN Mauser 98 that's chambered in a cartridge that has already become a classic - the .375 Ruger

Ah Paul, say it ain't so! Just needed a 64 Brenneke reamer for your other 98 and you had the first 375 Ruger, less a few thou.


I wish someone would speak up saying they are takng a 30 Newton out this fall. That would be kewl.

I love the old classics. I used my .375 H&H for bear this spring and will be using several others this fall. My .30-06, 9.3x62, 7x57, and 6.5x55 will all get their turns at some point. Other classics I have, but probably won't use this fall include- .257 Roberts, .270 Win, .308 Win, and .45-70.

These old rounds never fail to get the job done for me.

Oh yeah, and if I get it in time (which I doubt) my 7x64 Brenneke will also be coming out with me.

Lol. I know. It was a barbaric thing to do but a M98 is a perfect platform for the Ruger cartridge if a guy wants a larger medium bore.

I saw a .25 Newton once, in a Newton rifle. It was a very interesting design.

And an M98 in .375 Ruger? Oh boy...I agree the M98 is a perfect platform, but...

Keep us posted on that one, still think this one is the best 30 magnum, way ahead of its time.

For me, the classic cartridges are those 100 years old and older. .40-82 WCF will be fun to use on deer this fall and any decently sized black bear that happens to be in my iron sights.

Along with some more modern cartridges like the NEW KING and the 300WSM, I'll be taking the (legitimized 14 years ago but wildcatted way earlier) .260 as well as the old classics 45 Colt in a Winchester 94 Trapper and the .303 British in the modern Ruger #1.

I will load the .303 with TSX bullets, and modern powder, like Bartells example. New fire for an old soldier!

Yes, the .303, .30-30, .30-40 Krag and some others look like they step up a bit with modern technology.

For me it'll be a 6.5x54 and a 358 norma mag this year, maybe the 25-20 if I can one to hold still 2 feet away.
