Where have all the Mausers gone?!

German WW2 manufacture K98k's are really scarce in Canada. I think Canadian vets had a lot harder time bringing back rifles than American vets. There are far more K98's available in the U.S. than in Canada even on a per capita basis. In Canada there seem to be a lot more Nazi handguns around than rifles, a lot easier for our servicemen to sneak back home, I guess. You see K98's advertized in the U.S. as "duffle-cut", the stock is sawn in two under the barrel band so the rifle would fit in a soldier's duffle bag. I have never seen a duffle-cut in Canada. An alternative to a hard to find German service rifle(all- matching) is a 1941 Portuguese, a beautiful example of early war Oberndorf quality which can be found easier than a German issued rifle. And many of these are in remarkable condition.

Even two years ago, the "expert" opinion by some on CGN regarding the $300 RC's was that they would last forever, and would never increase in value. Since they weren't "collectable", they were a good candidate for modification.

Some are now saying the same thing about Russian SKS's and Mosin Nagants.

Last I heard, Westrifle had located a sizeable quantity of RC K98's somewhere in the former Soviet Union but was on the fence about bringing them in. If there is enough demand, suggest you e-mail him and perhaps more will come in.

Personally, I'd rather see more of the Yugo refurbs - they were much nicer in general.

I hear ya Andy! I really think the M-N's are going to see huge increases over the next few years. Quite a bit longer for the SKS's, but eventually it will happen.

True enough - the gravy train cannot roll on forever ;)

When Mosins only cost $110 - you can't afford to NOT own one or more.

hahah brutal! Bubba is always lurking, bandsaw and beer in hand.

I'll send westrifle and email, thanks for the heads up Claven! I suppose I'll keep scouring the EE :p

I would love to find a nice typical Russian Capture k98 rifle, not cleaned up or restored since the Russians tucked them away. I think this is just another variation of a fantastic historical firearm.

WW2 ended in 1945. thats over 65 years ago. At one time, gun magazines always had articles on how to convert that ugly military rifle into a really nice "sporter"

I know, it makes me angry to think people STILL do that. The old story of no cash for a sporting rifle, food needed on the table etc... makes sense ###x years ago, but not today.

Someone started up a "Bubba Support Group" thread last week, after an insensitive person in a gun shop said unkind words about a scoped milsurp. I want to go on the record that I affirm anyone's right to "sporterize" their milsurp property. I don't care if they do, in fact it's a great source of amusement when done poorly and something I admire when on a rare occassion it's done well.

The three RC rifles I got have all been cleaned and in two cases the stock has been resanded. I need to find one that's shellaked.
I remember hearing how shooters and collectors would try and scrub off the nasty red band painted on the lend lease M1 Garands. Now that is a detail of the rifle seriously sought after.
Back in the 1990's I walked into Crown Surplus in Calgary, they had probably 50 or so K98 or Gew98 rifles for $100 each. I bought one, should have bought them all. This was before RCs came into the country.

I still remember the RCs JP had at P&S a few years back. I should have jumped on one of them!
