-first impression:
1. small, just as small as my BRS-99 but lighter. cute , especially the top and bottom HGs , being the gas piston is so tiny , making removal a bit of a challenge , heres is an easy procedure:

a. remove carrier.
b. insert a flat screw driver (like in pic below) with the right hand , push in .
c. with left thumb press down on the protruding back end of the gas piston , the piston head will rise and rest it on the back of the gas block .
d. with right hand pull up on the piston head while your left thumb still on the back end of the gas piston.

2. black .... me like , paint ... not so much , good thing the paint wasnt applied too thick.

3. workmenship, receiver is well made , best in the family, thicker walls , no machine marks inside and out (see pic below, right side) . trigger housing not similar to other cousins altho most parts looks interchangeable.

4. front sight blocks and gas blocks still has the usual casting marks found on CZ and FSN .

5. appearence at a glance, if it wasnt for the mag , you wouldnt be able to tell the difference between the two shorties altho on my 7.62 it came with a round hood front sight block while the 5.56 is the standard open front sight like on my CZ and FSN.

-features:
1. love the side rails. uses AK mount , do not need to remove the mount for cleaning , thats a good thing in holding zero. unfortunately my mount is about 4 mm off set to the right and the standard side folder has to be removed to install the AK mount. AK mount work great with red dot or a scope. note: there are AK mounts that are very close to center.

2. standard brake. same for both , same muzzle diameter altho i expected the 5.56 would have a smaller opening but no.

3. tabbed carrier. good to have and welded nicely.

-problem , no problem with the 7.62 but on the 5.56 , i was unable to remove the gas piston , it came out partly but was hung up on something inside the rear sight block , when i removed the rear sight leaf and the flat spring, the piston slid out without any issue , when i checked under the leaf flat spring i noticed an indent that was causing the problem so i filed it down and that remedied the problem . OK , im not suggesting you do the same , if you have the same problem then please contact north sylva or the dealer where you purchased the rifle from.

- family portrait : from the left , CZ858-2, CZ858-4, FSN-01K, FSN-01W , CSA compact 7.62 and CSA compact 5.56mm.

First off, you have a great collection. Second, I love what You did with the fixed folders.... was that difficult? Any tips? Now that I got my 11.5 CSA, I'd like to give my old NR CZ a beefier look... I got a fixed stock from the EE but no mounting hardware so this would be the perfect solution! :) (that and the screw that holds The folder to the receiver seems to like living there.)

I'm assuming you made the handguard yourself?

yeeep , make it from a VZ wood HG which i buggered up from an earlier project, lucky for me the buggered up end wasnt the rear .

Fvcking Curtton, stole my idea for the compact 7.5". Where the hell did you get time to already cut the wood????

your idea ? was it patented ? :D took me two hours with only hand tools , a box cutter, hack saw blade and a file .

What did you use to block the back of the reciever on the compact?

nothing , nada, nil , zilch, zip , zero , bupkis.

This is truly awesome. Congratulations !!!! Have you thought adding a 11" CSA to complete the collection..? :)

hey bud, can you give us a breakdown of how you modded the wood furniture to fit? if you had to do it again, what parts would you source and what tips could you give someone whose looking to do the same to their CSA VZ58? thx!
