I own several examples of both guns plus the SVT40 and CZ858.
It's a close call, but I find it much easier to get all of my shots on target with the Mosins and SVT40 at 200 yards than with the SKS, with which I almost always throw at least one or two shots off the target. If you've got the range and are interested in distance shooting, get something chambered in 7.62x54R.
The SKS is not a bad hunting backup rifle, though you'll probably need to limit your shots to 150 yards or less if you do, so it's essentially a bush rifle. Similarly, if you want to do lots of practice at distances of around 100 yards, the price of ammo for the SKS makes it a better option for that.
Good luck with whatever you get!
