I am going to end up buying both eventually, but which one would you buy first? I was thinking the mosin. That way I could use it as a back up hunting rifle.

What about corrosive ammo, should I just stay away from it?

SKS shoots cheaper and easier to get ammo. Corrosive is fine to use as long as you clean the gun after shooting. More of a fun gun than the Mosin Nagant, which is also easier to clean after firing corrosive ammo. Non-corrosive hunting and practice ammo can be found for both, but it isn't cheap like surplus ammo is. Which one first? Depends. For shooting fun and cheap ammo, go SKS. For a back-up rifle, go with the Mosin Nagant, which is still a fun gun to shoot but with more power and accuracy than the SKS.

West rifle has $110 Mosins and marstar has $75 SKS "buy both!!!!!!"

I saw that west rifle for $110! That is what is making it so hard to decide. I also live 20 mins from West Rifle. Buying both is not an option. I also have a wife and kids about to start all the after school activities again$$$$. hockey, figure skating, basketball, swimming (x2), dance. and Christmas around the corner.

mosins will NEVER be cheaper than thet are now that being said I have 5 mosin and 1 sks. I love them both the sks is more fun but the mosin is a peice of history.

Thanks for the input guys. I think that the mosin wins due to its price. At $110 I have to agree that I may never see it for a cheaper price.

Looksa like I will get an SKS in the spring.

I know it sucks when it is a "one or the other" situation..i have done well as my Wife let me get 3 SKS Rifles and a Shotgun this year. I will wait until next Summer and maybe i will look at a CZ-858.

I own 2 of each. If push came to shove it would be hard to decide. My choice if it were my only firearm would be the Mosin. Accurate, most simple thing you can shoot and damn near unbreakable.
SKS ammo is cheaper by the shot but guess what. You fire 3 times more. I use less ammo with the Mosin.
Love em both.

I own several examples of both guns plus the SVT40 and CZ858.

It's a close call, but I find it much easier to get all of my shots on target with the Mosins and SVT40 at 200 yards than with the SKS, with which I almost always throw at least one or two shots off the target. If you've got the range and are interested in distance shooting, get something chambered in 7.62x54R.

The SKS is not a bad hunting backup rifle, though you'll probably need to limit your shots to 150 yards or less if you do, so it's essentially a bush rifle. Similarly, if you want to do lots of practice at distances of around 100 yards, the price of ammo for the SKS makes it a better option for that.

Good luck with whatever you get!

i went with the mosin first. it is an awesome gun

but you can't compare it to the sks which is as much fun, but so much cheaper to shoot

So for a first gun I would recommend the sks or even a 10/22 that will give you lots of trigger time

I vote get the SKS first because of the amazing deals available right now. Your gonna buy a crate of ammo so why not get the SKS with it for $75 from Marstar, this deal won't be around long and Mosin's will still be about $110 in the spring.

i love my M44, my first ever rifle...killed lots of moose with it over the years while hunting with my dad (RIP).
i dont think the SKS has the balls to knock down big game like the 7.62 x 54R
