I'm looking at building a new AR as my wife recently stole mine for 3-gun competitions :D

I've pretty much decided on an SR-15 upper, but am willing to entertain suggestions on this as well. It will need to be exportable to the US is the only real restriction as there are a few matches there I'm planning on attending.

I've been looking at Larue and Spikes Tactical so far in terms of options, but curious as to what brands I should be considering from those of you who have some build experience. I have also heard some good things about Cadex lowers as well.

Any significant benefits of Billet over Forged to justify the costs?

Thanks in advance (and if you can also let me know who carries your suggestions in Canada that would be great).

I think you need to consider the ease of getting it across the border, I'd email Alberta Tactical or Dlask to see if their Canadian made rifles are getting form 6 approval since they dont meet the Clinton requirements of American content. If getting it across and back is your concern, it might be best to go with one that was 'compliant' to get it here in the first place, like one of the LMT's that Questar is selling; their prices are hard to beat and LMT will hold its resale value unlike Bushmaster etc...
Billet is heavier, but can come with nicer features like improved magwell, ambi bolt release etc and nicer lines. Forged are reportedly 'harder' but often the fit and finish sucks since theyre basically generic, wheras billet upper/lower sets fit and the lines (generally) line up better.
What's your price point?

If you're gonna go with a KAC upper why not the whole rifle?

We are only able to get the uppers out of the US right now.

Here is one pic of the Cadex lower. It mates up with an SR-15 upper really nice I'll try to get a pic of them together. (NEA shown)

If you want to have it exportable to the U.S., make sure you go with an American made lower (just to be sure). Questar has the Spikes Tactical stripped lower available for "Advance Order", and Armtac has Noveske stripped lowers in stock. You could also keep your eyes open for an excellent condition complete Colt/LMT/Noveske (etc.) lower on the EE.

For lower - purchase the lowerest priced forged lower made of 7075.

As long as it is a forged 7075 that is type 3 hard coat anodized - it does not matter what the brand name is. You can find a stripped one for 145 bucks.

"billet" lower is only for people who want to have the "special" look and markings. It does nothing in terms of utility.

Thanks for the info guys,

VictorF/Ar180 shooter - price is not an issue for me, I'm much more concerned with overall quality and fit. I'll have a look at the Spikes Tactical and LMT ones from Questar as you've suggested.

Farmboy - if you can get a picture of the SR-15 upper on a Cadex lower that would be awesome (expect an SR-15 upper order coming in very soon!). Any issues you are aware of with these lowers and exportability to the US on a Form 6? On the note of accessories, any updates yet on Magpul stocks (I'm thinking maybe a UBR for this build)?

Geentips - thanks for the info on type 3 anodized - I'll add that to my criteria when looking at options.

We currently have the Noveske stripped lower in stock. In addition, we will be carrying some other stripped lower as well in the future.

If you want features and quality I'd go with the Cadex or ATRS. How well its going to mate up to your upper is really a crap shoot unless you could sent the upper to ATRS and have them precision fit the upper to the lower.

If I were to go for a premium AR I'd probably talk to ATRS. Get them to put together the receivers, BCG, Barrel etc. install trigger of your choice and the Samson Evolution HG. That is how I'd do it.

ATRS can you do a slab side?

By slab side are you meaning no forward assist? If so yes if not pardon my ignorance and bring me up to speed by what you mean by slab side please.

Which we can do. Or you could purchase our matched upper and lower set to have a perfect match of lines and features.

Any problems with exporting to the US on a form 6 with your lowers? I've never built a rifle before, always purchased complete units so this is all new to me.

Is there a link on your site for the uppers you carry?

Thanks for any info.

We have our info with BATFE right now for this very reason. They should not have an issue once they confirm what we are manufacturing is just another high end gussied up AR15. Hopefully we will have form 6s for our own personal guns soon so we can head down to some of the shoots in Montana and Idaho

Excellent - please keep me updated on how this goes!
