:D Just like the title says, we just found out we are gonna have a mini gunnut in nine months or so. Problem is that I don't have any single shot or beginner rimfires so I need your help. What is a good beginners rifle for a young gun to start out with? :D Gotta be prepared!:D

An old cooey would be good. That's what I learned on. A few years later I got one of these for my 8th birthday. I still have it, and no it will never be for sale. But i reccommend looking for one.

Marlin Model 915Y "Little Buckaroo" Youth Rifle

marlin_915Y.jpg

The Model 915Y is a youth rifle. It is pretty much a single shot version of the Model 925 with a lighter barrel, no magazine, and a shortened stock. It is quite light, weighing only 4.25 pounds, in no small part due to the fact that it is only 33.25 inches long. Here are some basic specifications:

Action: Bolt (single shot)
Caliber: .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle
Sights: Adjustable open rear, ramp front; receiver grooved for tip-off scope mounts and drilled and tapped for scope bases.
Safety: Thumb operated; red cocking indicator
Metal finish: blued
Stock: Walnut finished hardwood, Mar-Shield finish, Monte Carlo comb.
Length of pull: 12"
Barrel length: 16.25"
Features: T900 trigger assembly; stainless steel version available as Model 915YS
2006 MSRP: $221
It is a very handy rifle. Its light weight and short length help make it fast handling, and its standard open iron sights help it along. Like all Marlin rifles, it uses Marlin’s patented Micro-Groove barrel rifling. The single shot feature is convenient because you can simply set a cartridge in the loading/ejection port and push the bolt forward.

The short throw bolt cocks on opening and is quite smooth in operation once it is wears in. Out of the box it is a bit stiff. I found the 915Y to be very easy to shoot off-hand, and especially fun for some good ‘ol plinking. In short, if you want a fast handling and easy to load single shot rifle, or an inexpensive plinking rifle for your kid, the 915Y can work for you.

Hey, congratsafreakinlations dude!!!

I have two young lads myself.

I would advise against the .22 for now and go buy yourself a cool shotty for when the Lady has a preggo hormone moment and you need to go to the range!!!!

I second this motion.... but I'd bump the caliber up to a 120mm tank!

Those hormone things can be real good or REEEEEEAL bad. TWK

Non-the-less, congrats!!! (be a good father, the world needs more of them)

"GOTTA BE PREPARED ?" Don't you think it is a little late for that?:) If you keep this up, you could end up with a real Arsenal!:)

I would say you have five or six years to make a final decision, and, besides, it might be a Girl, then you will have to have a Pink stocked one.

However, I would recommend a single shot rifle with open sights and a good trigger mechanism. There are some Youth models available with shorter stocks, but also have spacers so that the length of pull can be adjusted as the young shooter gets older.

A single shot rifle teaches the new shooter to concentrate on hitting the target, as there is only one chance to hit it. They are relatively inexpensive, and Safety at first is the number one factor. Teach them with open sights, and develop the techniques of position, breathing and trigger control. Scoped rifles can be introduced later.

I bought my 10 year old daughter a Marlin 915y stainless for xmas, she loves it. Then I had to get myself something to shoot with her at the range, so i bought a 10-22 tactical with heavy 16" barrel an houge stock. She likes to empty the 10 round mag in about 3 seconds and of the bipod hits about 9 out of ten 6" steel gongs at about fourty yards rapid fire. Last sunday she burned through a 525 round box of blazer ammo in no time at all with my rifle and did plenty of shooting with hers as well, I had sore thumbs from not being able to keep up. loading all those. mags On the way home she proposed a trade deal, an even swap hers for mine. I caved in a little telling her that she should hang on to her xmas present and first rifle forever ,but granted he half ownership in the 10-22. She is a very happy girl...... I just cant wait till she discovers my M14.

I'd say hold-off, until you have the little bundle in your hands. Like names, sometimes you need to meet the little bugger before you know what's right! :) Without a doubt, I'd say a single-shot bolt should be the first. I like the look of the Henry.

Congrats on your great news!

Wow, you had me scared there for a moment............ha ha.
Congrats on the the, the, well you know, a good deed well done.
I took a liking those little T/C's.
Single shot, expandable butt and the hinge action is just slick.
Single shot bolt is a good way to go, but for now a days, something
different would speak real class amoung the peers.
And for a little she, pink cammo as well.
Your life is now changed forever you know......... :)

Dude
I am trying to figure out if thats the best or worst excuse for buying a gun I have even heard.
Anyways I agree with waiting and letting him/her decide I bought my son the classic single shot bolt then the tacticool semiauto he shot them with some interest but one day he showed me what he really wanted it was a police sniper Remington 700
We got him a Marlin 795 done up with a scope, bipod and sling and he is as happy as a sniper.

There is nothing like getting a gift that someone bought before you hit the ground. Its a constant reminder that you are special enough that someone took the time and effort to pick something out for you before they even knew you. Pretty cool. Guessing what the little critter is going to be like is a lot of fun, and if you get it right, the gift is even more special. Congratulations on becoming a Dad, no greater responsibility in the world, and no greater pleasure. Any new gun, will be ubber cool. It may not be perfect, but they will never get rid of it, so make it a good one, and remember they don't stay small long.

If I were the squirt I would love to have something that I can use when I am 6, but is still comfortable to use when I grow up. Something like a CZ scout, which you can restock with an adult size stock later, and turn it from a single shot to a 10 shot, and its accurate to boot. Keep it for a life time, and when the time comes, start the cycle all over again.

Again congratulations on the news. May you and your family be super blessed with a happy healthy little one, just nothing better on earth. And always remember they learn by example.

Substitute ".22 rifle" for "sweeties".......welcome to parenthood!!!

A Henry Mini-bolt comes to mind for a .22lr rifle.

Who are we kidding, but it's a great excuse to buy yourself a new .22 under the false pretense. Get whatever you want! I'd reccomend a cooey, because if your wife/girlfriend is anything like mine, the nicer expensive rifles were not a part if the new "baby budget" till about 5 years after they (twins) were born.

x2...except...there will be less "oversight" on the finances now...during the "baby buzz/reality sinks-in" phase than there will be once your bundle(s) of joy comes into this world. Same goes for how you use your free time. SOoooooooo...I'd say go a little more than a little less. Other than being allot bigger than the Henry Mini-Bolt I suggested, the CZ scout would be fine choice and besides...you'd have the better part of a decade to break it in~they won't be able to manage it for years.

Father of 3, signing-out. :)

My Grandfather started me on 308 when I was 4 or 5.. Nothing like shooing a FN Fal for the first time. And it was full auto back then... C1A2. Second gun I shot was a Tompson M1A1 also a really fun gun to shoot. (It was he shot 308 with the bipod he can do the tommy) Then someone wanted to let me use an uzi at the range they didnt let me shoot that one..
