Trying to read through both rule books is getting confusing. Would like to have a gun for both disiplines single action prefered. if so, than just the holster would be different or that could be used too?

The 5" STI Eagle could be competitive in both IPSC Standard Division and in IDPA Enhanced Service Pistol Division. Other options might include the S&W M&P, the Glock, and the CZ-75.

If you choose an IDPA-compliant holster, it will be fine for IPSC. Not quite as gamey, perhaps, but fine.
 
i had been looking already at the sti site but wasnt sure if because they posted on there that it was good for idpa that it was(hate to buy one and find out no)
now my delema is 9-40 38 super or 45?????
I already have a 9 and a 38 super so should i just go with one of those for sake of ammo supply?
 
As you know, the cost of .45ACP ammunition and brass has reduced it's popularity (compared to 9x19mm and .40S&W) among some target shooters. Depending upon which Division you are in, you may or may not require .45ACP or even benefit from a major power factor (available with .45ACP or .40S&W). All things considered, depending upon your personal willingness to shoot all "A" hits, 9x19mm might make a lot of sense.
 
If you decide to shoot a 9mm in IPSC you may be a little better off buying a gun that will fit into the Production division rather than a Standard. All Production guns are shooting minor so it will be a level playing field for you. If you shoot 9mm in Standard you will be competing against guys shooting major. I currently shoot an M&P 9mm in both IDPA Stock Service Pistol and IPSC Production Class. That said, I am thinking of buying a .40 and moving up to Standard class in IPSC. As someone else already mentioned, if you buy an IDPA compliant holster and mag pouches they will be legal to use in IPSC as well. That's what I do too. I may be at a "slight" disadvantage using them in IPSC but I like to keep my draw consistent for both sports.

what about 38 super where would that fall in the power factor.
considering that because i am shooting that in open and would save alot for reload equipment
 
best crossover? depends on what divisions you want to play in. cheapest would be a glock 17. a Single stack 1911, in either 40 or 9 will work. Or the ultimate ride would be the new 5.4" SVI.
 
A 1911 is SA, and therefore if you use it in IPSC you'd be in the Standard division (first shot trigger pull). A 1911 9mm would place you in the Minor power factor, becuase the min for Major in Standard is .40.

I think that if you want to stay with a 9'ner - go with a gun that'll allow you to compete in Production. if you set your mind on a .40 or higher, then the 1911 variants make good sense.
 
Probably the best crossover gun right now is an S&W M&P Pro in 9mm, SSP in IDPA and Production in IPSC.

I see you want single action so my recommendation may not be what your interested in.

The 5.4" SVI may not fit in the IDPA box and therefore would not be legal for IDPA.

The 40cal in IDPA is a bit of a red headed child. While guns chambered for same can play in both SSP & ESP divisions depending on type of gun you will be up against 9MM guns in both divisions. If you reload and load down to 125 PF with your .40cal then you do benefit from slightly larger holes for IDPA in SSP & ESP. For IPSC you could shoot the lower powered loads in Production with the same benefit or load for major and shoot STandard division.

For the new shooter it seems to me a DA/SA, DAO or striker fired pistol chambered in 9MM would be the best option. Ammo is less expensive if you don't reload and quality guns can be had in this caliber for under $800 that will be competitive.
