Any 358 Win Lovers out there?

I've just begun playing with a Ruger Frontier in 358. Here are a couple loads I've tried thus far. Keep in mind these are not starting loads!
I'm going to pick up some IMR3031 and give that a try soon. I have some Reloader 15 and Re 17 on hand but can't find any start loads for the Re17 anywhere. I'm a bit curious to give the Re17 a try too.
Anyway...

Note, the 48 grains of IMR 3031 showed some pressure signs via the primer but extraction was still easy. Also, the recoil with the IMR loads seemed to be noticeably greater than with the H4895 loads.
I've had an email in with Alliant for a few days now questioning about loads for the 358 using Reloader 17, no reply of yet.

The old "huge selection of bullets" arguement gets old after a while. There's plenty of bullets out there for a 35cal shooter and most guys would only shoot one or two bullets in a rifle like a 338 or 358 anyways.

How many bullets do you regularly use in your 338Federal after you found a load?

.

I haven't built one yet. I generally put at least a hundred rounds through my hunting rifle each year for practice.

I was under the impression bullets are hard to find but if I am wrong please let me know where I can find a reliable supply. I come on CGN to learn from others and I have an open mind.

My first intent for a build was a .358 Win and I liked the idea of using .38/.357 bullets as well. I reluctantly steered away from .358 Win to .338 Fed because components seemed to be more readily in supply.

Good report AG - thanks.

My .358 Frontier loves the 250 Hornady spire point with IMR 4198
Does that mean you get good velocity or accuracy - or both? If chronographed what are u getting - details please?
I prefer the 225 gr bullets in mine, I find the give me the best combination of penetration and trajectory from this cartridge. - dan
Dan, that sounds reasonable. Any details on what bullet, speed, powder please?

Excellent post AG.... have you tried 4320 powder ?
That works very well in my 358.
Kevan - what bullet do you use and what velocity do you achieve?

----
A pretty good load in my Frontier has been 48.5 IMR 4895 with a 225 Partition - last chrony results 4 shots were 2337, 2331, 2337, 2335fps - very consistent. Gotta get me some Tac to take it to the next level. I use 44grs IMR 3031 to get 2210MV with 250 SpeerHC - about all I can safely sqeeze out of that shorty so far.

Got my reply from Alliant re. Reloader 17 in the 358...

"RL 17 is likely too slow for this cartridge. RL 17 is very similar to
the speed of IMR 4350 and I see no loads for any powder nearly that
slow. A faster powder such as RL 10x or RL 15 is likely more
appropriate. Thanks for your note and have a nice weekend."

I would love to get my hands on some TAC for testing. Unfortunately I can't find a source locally. I'm going to have a look at the upcoming show see if I can source some there.

I don't care about velocity, accuracy is great, shoots good out to 250 yards and flattens big mule deer like a bolt of lightning. I don't remember where I got the idea of using 4198 but of all the powders I tried it was by far the best [most accurate] out of my 16" Frontier

I have 358 made on a small ring mauser in a nice Fajen stock. I have taken it hunting more than any other rifle. This caliber is perfect in Ontario and points east.

I doubt I will ever use it again. It needs a new home.

Using a suggested accuracy load from an older Sierra manual for their 225 gr. bullet I tried Sierra, Barnes, Hornady, and Nosler in that weight.
Velocities varied from 2190 to 2210 for Barnes and Nosler, 2247 to 2295 for the Sierra and Hornady with the Sierra being the accuracy champ.

I have always wanted a SR in 358win, or 35Rem.

and I usually take my shots eastward, cause I like to hunt in the late afternoon, and like to have the sun at my back, so a gun that only "Points East" is right up my alley!

I also love the 358 calibers for moose. I have a 358 Win and a 35 Whelen Imp.

The 358 Win is built as follows;

Browning/Sako medium length action
21" Douglas premium SS barrel
Brown Precision ultra light stock
Limbsaver pad
Custom adjustable peep sight with front fiber optics
5.75 lbs
49.5grs IMR4895
CCI 200
Nosler Partition 225gr
OAL 2.80"
2480 fps

The 35 Whelen Imp.

Carl Gustav action
21" McGowen barrel
Bishop AA Fancy American walnut
Custom adjustable peep sight with front fiber optics
6.25 lbs
55.5 r IMR3031
CCI 200
Speer SP 250gr
2575 fps

Moosetracker - very nicely put together 35s. I like the custom peep. Both VERY capable moose machines IMO.

I just cobbled up twenty 358Win rounds for next weeks moose hunt which are very similar to yours above - a grain less powder - so 70fps or so slower. Zeroing my rifle last Sunday I twice put three into 1 1/4" @ 3 1/2" high @ 100yds - a hunting I go. Here's the load;

Ruger77 Hawkeye - 22" barrel
48.5grs IMR4895
WLRM
Nosler Partition 225gr
OAL 2.820"
six shots chrony readings - 2408, 2386, 2409, 2388, 2375, 2396fps

If anyone needs ammo, my friends shop just got in 50 boxes of the new Hornady custom 358win 200grain SP ammo, 807-346-4088.
I bought this past year a Win model 88 in 358, unfortunately with a cut barrel, but will be cutting it into a true carbine(18") this winter and fitting a nice set of express sights to it and giving it to my brother for his birthday in the spring for deer/moose rifle.

I love 35 cal rifles, it is too bad that this calibre never seems to take the general publics affection, I have a 35 WCF/Win 1895 that is great, along with a 35 Rem/model 14 and a custom 35 Whelan in a mauser. My dream 35 cal rifle would be a Ross 1910 or 1905 in 35WCF, rare as hense teeth! It is great to see the 9.3 taking off another great mid bore calibre, wich i own a 9.3x62 and a 9.3x74r, nothing like putting an animal down with one shot from these mid-bores, take care, Dale Z!
