Dilemma --

Funny thing happened just after my last post. I got a call from a family friend, who hunts regularly, he has offered to come with me on my first "experience". This could be profitable for me as I can benefit from experience.

I appreciate the feedback and will let you know how it goes. I'm morally aligned to the task and not too worried about it.

Kingpin: I think you asking about the percieved ethics of killing coyotes in order to confirm your own view was a smart way to approach a new hunting target - especially one that is "next to useless" as far as meat and hides are concerned.

I don't know if coyotes are considered noble and/or endangered in Alberta but out here we shoot them on sight. As a project skin a couple and tan the hide yourself.

Pest control is part of good stewardship and wildlife management. We weed our gardens and poison rats in the basement, and shoot coyotes at the farm. Same concept, bigger undertaking.
 
Thanks..... I think I was just confused on the whole issue. Coyotes are. Onside red pests and can be lumped into the same category as rats or gophers. Unfortunatly my brain had an issue putting them into that group and cause the OP. I'm quite a bit clearer on that issue now and have decided to break in the new 7mm-o8 and take em down!

The OP has a good point, in considering recovering the value of the pelt, rather than just chucking the entire carcass into a pit. (Or worse, leaving it to rot, and attract other scavenger/predators, and spread disease throughout the area.) He may find skinning and stretiching a pelt too much work, and he may find tanning the pelt not his newest passion, but he is right to consider it. And, by checking out the local trapper community, he may find someone who doesn't have the cash for a new 7mm-08, doesn't think skinning and stretching a pelt too much work for the money, and he may make a friend in the process.

Yup, coyotes are a pest, and were I back on my farm I would shoot 'em on sight. But, I might also wait until their pelts were prime, and give carcass and all to a local trapper.
 
Hell I'm city born and raised, aside from summers in the Thunder Bay bush, which is no cakewalk, but those months in the bush were enough to get my mind right on such things!

Coyotes get shot on sight, just as quick as I would swat a fly.

Where I live now, there is coyote problems, and I bought myself a .243 to fix em. :D

I do get the OP's issue though. Many people who don't know better don't get the problems coyotes cause. Last years Deer hunt we had a guy with an easy shot at a coyote pushed right to him, and he didn't even think to raise his gun. Just stood there excited to see a coyote. LOL

He got an earful afterwards. ;)
 
@ the OP, there are a few hutterite colonies in and around your area that will trade their goods (ie. chickens and/or eggs,or veggies) for your coyotes as long as the pelt is not damaged too severely.
 
Depending on the situation coyotes can be a blessing or a pest, one of my relatives has a grain farm, didn't have dog's and such and didn't want coyotes killed.

Of course i was puzzelled as i thought them to be a scourage of the land but they do keep mice in check which helps out when the mice start ofer running the place..

Bottom line is if the coyotes are causing problems shoot on sight, kill them all! If the coyotes are not a concern hunt them if you want to.

If a relative asked me this question my thoughts would go to what rifle/load it would next got to what call = hand held or electronic it would not go to what I would do with the remains...

You will be feeding other wildlife, recognize that there is essentially no predator for the 'yotes. You're doing nature a favour. :)
