Whats a good digital scale?

Hi all,

I am starting to reload again and I had a RCBS 750 digital scale before but it was always 0.1 off and it drove me up the wall so I got rid of it.

Now i am looking to replace it and wondering what a good alternative? I see Reloaders.ca has a scale for $60 and wondering if it was good. http://www.reloaders.ca/oscommerce/product_info.php?cPath=46&products_id=153

Any help is appreciated and I am not looking to spend a fortune as I will only be reloading about 50 shells a month max.
 
Cheap scales need to be calibrated often. I tried a few and none held 0.2grains over 10 throws.
Do yourself a favor and get a beam scale or a high-end digital one.


edit: the RCBS Chargemaster has very good reviews. Not cheap though.
 
I had a pretty good scale however it was just as good as the cheaper ones as I had to re calibrate every 10 times or so. The charge master is what I originally wanted but I don't wanna spend that kind of money for something I don't reload too often.

Maybe another company's scale would be better?

Buy yourself a good beam scale. They're perfect for a lower volume loader. They're very consistent, reliable and accurate.

I've never found mine to be wanting.

x 3. Beams are perfect for the high volume loader too. With a descent powder measure and the right powder you toss most of the time anyway doing an occasional check. Not that big a deal to stay within a 1/10th.
 
Thanks guys, maybe I will look into a beam scale. I tried a Lee scale before but it wasn't the best so maybe I try something higher end.

I just picked up a Hornady digital scale, was around $110. I bought it to replace the cheap battery operated digital one that was included in the Hornady LNL single stage kit.

This one holds calibration, unlike the battery operated one. I trust it a lot more than the little battery one, and it's way cheaper than RCBS' offerings.

A little tip:

Check the calibration of a digital scale every time you use it. I had to pull 30 rounds because I didn't check calibration before loading. I'm just happy I caught it before I finished, or fired any of the rounds.
 
after those crap, but tempting $30 ones, i got this, 1000 XP Compact Electronic Reloading Scale. was 150 at lebaron.

seems to be pretty accurate for me.
 
for low volume and I cheap, I'd say go with a good beam scale.

never had any issues with mine until i started weight sorting brass, bullets, and reloading 300+ rds a month.

Then I shelled out about 350 for a Acculab Vic 123. It is accurate to 2/100th of a grain, and holds the calibration once I let it warm up. It was a bit of an investment, but noticed an immediate imporovement across the board with all of my loads, especially the smaller .223 and 9mm stuff.

Well worth it.
 
Owning a digital and a beam, i find myself using more often the beam scale, very dependable and no variable... JP.
 
i still use my old BONANZA(for the kiddies, that's what they called a pacific before hornady took over- ie bonanza became pacific which became hornady) beam for weighing powder- i have a digital but 1) i don't trust batteries- seen those fail too many times 2) it NEVER goes out of calibration, 3) accurate enough for my needs, b/c i use a measure and you get at least that much variation per throw anyway- i'm a progressive reloader- so i only ck every 10 or so after i get set up- as for my digital, it's a genie or some such thing i got off e-bay for 30 bucks- good enough
the reason i got the bonanza was that my ohaus 505( rcbs) fell, broke the pointer off the beam, and since the beam is potmetal, you can't fix it- maybe you can with today's glues- anyway, the bonanza has a steel beam, and the poises are steel- and the v's are good and deep so your poises don't slip out with a bit of a jostle

My rcbs scale does the same if I leave the charge on the scale. If I remove the charge immediately after weighing and let the scale zero it works perfect.
 
Yeah the rcbs worked ok but it was always flicking 0.1 and drove me crazy. I am going to hold off and use an old beam I bought but never used and see how it works. The Hornady auto charge is on sale for $200 in the usa right now so that is tempting but I don't wanna have to drive and get it.
