264 Win Mag vs 270 Win

All this attention to powder use and barrel life for a hunting rifle is silly.

You might shoot 50 rounds a year after finding a good load, so here's the math:

- only about 20 years of benchrest accuracy and another 10 years of minute of deer for the 264 Win Mag, compared to 40 years and 20 years for the 270. Who keeps a rifle that long?; and
- you'd only get about 70 rounds out of a pound of $35 powder instead of 120 rounds, so your 50 rounds would cost a whopping $25 for the 264 Win Mag, instead of $15. That's a whole $10 a year in extra powder cost!!!

270 is the smart choice, but 264 might be fun. I probably should buy one of each and do a test, report results on CGN!

270 is more practical but practical is sometimes not as much fun!
The 264 definitely has the cool factor and more punch and not everyone has one.
I love my Ruger 358 win because it works so well and because not everyone has one.
I would give the 264 a try at least, depending on the rifle.

Ive had all three...the 264 is fun, I wasnt' convinced all the extra powder burned was worthwhile for the terrain I hunt here but might be a better proposition for out west. I stil have a 270 and a couple of 6.5-06's.

Barrel life shoudnt' be a big deal on a hunting rifle, the 264 I owned was built in '68 and could still shoot MOA...no idea on the round count from previous owners...the old short throat was a real pain to load 140's with unless you used Power Points or Corelocks which have dual diameters allowing you to seat further out.

good luck.

You already have a very nice .260 which is essentially the same as a .270.

No, not the same. Really.

But since you do have a 260 a bigger gap probably makes more sense. To me it should be based on its intended use. If you hunt where you will only shoot from 50- 300 yards why would you need a larger heavyer gun? But sometimes it is not about needs, it is about wants!

funny timing reading this thread, i was just thinking that i might get a 264. good advice here too.

how does the 264 compare to the 270 WSM? isn't case capacity pretty similar?

If you go for a 264,have the throat opened up to "normal".The factory specs call for a short throat for the orginal two diameter Winchester bullet. It makes reloading a lot less exciting.I use Magnum in my 264 . My 6.5-06 red lines at 2900.
