Just bought my first black rifle (XCR questions)

After many pages of not much info in the FAQ thread and running out of time before work. I was wondering if there is anything that should be done other than stated in the manuel before I shoot for the first time? I bought the tan .223 version and mounted a redfield revolution 2-7x33 which will have to do till I replenish the toy account for an upgrade.

I have wanted an ar-15 for many many years but couldn't justify the restricted as I don't shoot at a range. But this is close and maybe it will twist my arm to buy more. I plan on doing the break in with american eagle tactical(black box) and then hoping to find hornady steel match ammo for shooting and hunting.

If I can't find the Hornady steel match does anybody else have a recommendation for non FMJ ammo that works well through an XCR?

Thanks

Jason

I've never been one to do a 'break in' of rifles and mine shoot just fine.

As a question though, isn't it generally considered a bad idea to hunt with steel match ammo? I gotta think these bullets don't have near the expansion needed to effectively dispatch game.

Shouldn't the XCR be listed in the bits and parts section?Laugh2

Sorry couldn't resist. The tan ones look pretty cool. Pictures?
I'm not a believer in the whole break on stuff. Personally I think it's Bench rest Voodoo.

The hornady steel match ammo is the case only to keep cost down its loaded with the same BTHP that they recommend for varmints and predators and I have used to quickly dispatch predators for years.

Iam assuming you thought steel jacket FMJ

Oh...I didn't think you would be hunting with steel jacket...makes sense now.

Umm, XCRmonger is a member here and used to work for Robinson Arms, she might have a good idea for ammo recommendations...not sure how frequently she is here though.

Just a good cleaning and lube is all you need, then fire away. These are not super high precision rigs so any barrel break in procedure can be skipped ( if that is what you are asking)

^ I don't get it ?

Well lube the bolt carrier assembly I mean shiny wet, set the gas dial to 4, shoot 300-400 rounds, next if you are going use US factory loads than leave the gas setting at 2 you should be fine.

What's a good cold weather lube? By break in I ment the gas system break in they talk about

The break in on the XCR is not for the barrel, it's for the mechanism. Robarm recommend that the first 200-300 rounds be fired with the gas system set at 4. After that period the gas should be set at 2.

What do I loctite and what loctite do I use? Is that info in the Manuel? The gun is in the mail so I don't have it yet

not until something comes loose, fiddle the bolt catch, barrel nut and the brass ejector to see if it is loose when you are getting ready to leave the house, than again when you are putting her back in the safe.

My Rifle and Micro pistol both well into second case of ammo on their own and I have yet Loctite anything. mind you I don't strip down every nut and bolt when I clean them and I hand torque all the bolts.

Don't bother with loctite. That's an old wives tale from the very first ones that came off the line. You don't need loctite, and haven't for years.

You do, however, need to set the gas on 4 for the first 400 rounds or so, in order to work in the action, after which you set it at 2.

I use winchester white box 45 grain varmint.
sprall mart or Cambodian tire normally has it for $28 for 40.

I used the American eagle tac exclusively for my break in, it was good and cheap and had no troubles with it.

First thing: don't listen the trolls in here, they have a bad case of "non-restricted" envy and lash out at all non-restricted rifle.

Here are your answers:
Break-in, initial use
  1. fire 400 rounds of strong ammo like American Eagle 55 FMJ to break in the rifle with gas selector set at 3 or 4 (the lowest that doesn't give trigger slap).
  2. check you gas block to make sure that he doesn't untighten
  3. clean and lube your rifle as often as possible (I didn't do this at first)

Accurate ammo
  1. Hornady 60gr TAP-FDP is extremely accurate in almost all 1-9" rifles
  2. PMC 55gr M193 is very accurate
  3. Winchester 55gr FMJis also very accurate

Some shooters will tell you that no guns need a break in but Sig Blackwater 45 need 500 rounds fired for break in and they are fantastic pistols.

I saw what you did there. Nice. :D

Some more than others... ;) I've yet to see any black rifle (non-restricted or otherwise) with as detailed a 'break-in' as an XCR.

No loctite. Never used it. Just tighten everything up handtight. Others have already explained the gas system break in. Ohh and AR's dont need it because they are DI, with no adjustability. So back to your holes.
