So here I am playing with a couple of the Canada Ammo 2011 stamped Norinco M14 shorty(ies). It's been a really productive 2 hours running my hands all over them and wishing I could even USE one for zombie invasions! :D Thanks to Softail99 for lending me his M14 shorties for this casual observation.

The high school shop class is getting it right more and more and more. Yeah, the black plastic stock is a bit/tad/tiny margin long, but for a bear gun, who cares? The finish is black and dark, dark grey. I'm impressed. It's much smoother than my 2003 series M14 Norc, and right up there with my 2009 Norc M14. :D

One of the op rod guides was a teensy bit loose. That's acceptable in light of the many rattling USGI M14's that have been through my hands. The other shorty had a tight op rod guide. The high school shop class got it right. :D

Regarding the bolt, op rod, trigger group, everything is just on par with all the other Norc M14 generations. It's all good! Nice machining everywhere on these components. No worries here.

Rear sights klik nicely and loudly. They got this more 'right' than the older 'soft as dog poop metal' sights from long ago. Sounds to me that they will work for your hunting or bear gun or zombie gitter gun just fine. Not sure if they will work for serious competition... well maybe for casual shooting. :)

Yes, the front sight post is higher than my 2009 Norc M14, but it's a shorty, what did you expect? I'm pleased that they are trying better and better. The blade however protrudes out past the ears... might snag up your inner lining of your gun case. Just a word of warning!

I'm really impressed with the finish. Seems to be a lot smoother than all the Norcs I've played with over the years. They are improving things slowly. Yeah, the flash suppressor is welded on, but hey, they can be whacked off quite easily for you to customize your own shorty with a Smith Brake or something similar from Dlask or Fabsports(he had some IIRC before), I could be wrong here.

After I've seen chalkriver shoot his rifle and I did the wind calls, I'm impressed. Especially for a bug out gun or zombie invasion gun, this is great. I did not bring my .308 RCBS Precision Mic to the range to measure the brass, but hey, just send me 3 pcs of your fired brass and I'll gladly measure your headspace (approximate) dimensions. :D

Everything points to a homerun for the Norc M14 shorty from Canada Ammo. With the ammo deal, too, sounds like they knocked this one outta da park!

Anyways, if I think of anymore points to add to my previous observations, I'll add them here. I just had a great time playing with those 2 shorties. They sound like they will be winner to the long gun community!

Sounds good, I am thinking about getting a shorty also. Just out of curiousity, how much does the shorty weigh in comparison to a full length M14 ? I used to have a regular Norinco M14, and the heavy weight and long size was fine for range use, however I would'nt of wanted to ever take it hunting. I was wondering about how much the shorty weighed, and if it was a better size a weight for carrying in the field, for hunting ?...... Or is there a very little weight savings ? I suppose even if the weight is similar, then the shorty would still be more balanced, and easier to carry because of its more compact size.

With such a following of these chinese rifles, I'm surprised that a chinese factory has'nt copied a good scope mount, and made one that they could include with these rifles, along with the factory sling and cleaning kit. I'm sure lots of M14 buyers would have no problem paying a little bit extra for a quality 3 point scope mount, that a factory over there could make and include with the rifle, for a fraction of the price of a American made, quality mount.

Nah, the weight savings would be only few ounces of chopped barrel / steel. No worries about weight, with the chopped barrel it's about being a handy platform now for a truck gun or deer stand.

Now if one decides to knock off (the welds, too) their factory flash suppressor for a Smith Ent brake that's a tad shorter, then that project is doable. :D Very doable!

Brownells has those brakes in stock. Not certain if any of our dealers that sponsor the board have any in their inventory, but I can see some potential here with the large numbers being imported by Canada Ammo! :)

Hey Hungry,

I'm considering getting my rifle re-finished at Arma-Coat. Before I do that I would like to polish out the rough edges and tooling marks, any idea what I can use before I send it out? Is there a high grit metal sand paper I can use?

I took mine and my dad's to the range today, after a few rounds to line up and zero the sights we were getting 2-3 inch groups at 100 meters.
No malfunctions at all.
I was unsure about buying a norinco at first because of the quality issues, but so far it's been pretty good. We'll see how it does for the next few thousand rounds.:)
