So here I am playing with a couple of the Canada Ammo 2011 stamped Norinco M14 shorty(ies). It's been a really productive 2 hours running my hands all over them and wishing I could even USE one for zombie invasions!
Thanks to Softail99 for lending me his M14 shorties for this casual observation.
The high school shop class is getting it right more and more and more. Yeah, the black plastic stock is a bit/tad/tiny margin long, but for a bear gun, who cares? The finish is black and dark, dark grey. I'm impressed. It's much smoother than my 2003 series M14 Norc, and right up there with my 2009 Norc M14.
One of the op rod guides was a teensy bit loose. That's acceptable in light of the many rattling USGI M14's that have been through my hands. The other shorty had a tight op rod guide.
The high school shop class got it right.
Regarding the bolt, op rod, trigger group, everything is just on par with all the other Norc M14 generations. It's all good! Nice machining everywhere on these components. No worries here.
Rear sights klik nicely and loudly. They got this more 'right' than the older 'soft as dog poop metal' sights from long ago. Sounds to me that they will work for your hunting or bear gun or zombie gitter gun just fine. Not sure if they will work for serious competition... well maybe for casual shooting.
Yes, the front sight post is higher than my 2009 Norc M14, but it's a shorty, what did you expect? I'm pleased that they are trying better and better. The blade however protrudes out past the ears... might snag up your inner lining of your gun case. Just a word of warning!
I'm really impressed with the finish. Seems to be a lot smoother than all the Norcs I've played with over the years. They are improving things slowly. Yeah, the flash suppressor is welded on, but hey, they can be whacked off quite easily for you to customize your own shorty with a Smith Brake or something similar from Dlask or Fabsports(he had some IIRC before), I could be wrong here.
After I've seen chalkriver shoot his rifle and I did the wind calls, I'm impressed. Especially for a bug out gun or zombie invasion gun, this is great. I did not bring my .308 RCBS Precision Mic to the range to measure the brass, but hey, just send me 3 pcs of your fired brass and I'll gladly measure your headspace (approximate) dimensions.
Everything points to a homerun for the Norc M14 shorty from Canada Ammo. With the ammo deal, too, sounds like they knocked this one outta da park!
Anyways, if I think of anymore points to add to my previous observations, I'll add them here. I just had a great time playing with those 2 shorties. They sound like they will be winner to the long gun community!
