I'm looking into buying a new 22 WMR - had my eyes on a Ruger 77/22 Mag, but can't justify the heavy price tag.

Recently picked up a Savaga 93G at the local gun shop - a nice looking no-frills gun, but it didn't quite feel right (length of pull was short, felt 'unnatural' when shouldered). The price is right though @ $275 tax included).

I've been to the Marlin, Savage, Winchester, Remington and Ruger websites, and most of the bolt guns seem to have the same size dimensions as the Savage. The 77/22 Mag seemed to be a little larger gun. Switching away from bolts, an alternative to the 77/22 Mag would've been the Win 9422, but again it was pricy. I wish Marlin offered a lever in 22 WMR, but they don't.

As for bolts, although I prefer a clip, a tube mag doesn't bother me all that much. I'd like to keep the price around $300 so that I can top it off with a decent 4X scope.

I'll primarily be shooting at groundhogs (from about 80 yards) and targets at the range. I have an older Mossberg semi with a small 2.5X scope on it, but I'm not into semi's and I never pass up the chance to ge a new toy.

Any recommendations on a reasonably priced, better fitting solution? Anyone know of a gun that definitely feels 'better' than the 93G? (a bit of a weird question there)

And although I've given very little detail, are there any general thoughts on what old Mossberg semi's fetch in a sale. It may not be in new shape, but it is in decent condition, it works well and has seen relatively little use compared to most other shooters on here - maybe 250 - 300 rounds. I'm not exactly sure of the model # as I locked the gun away a few years ago and haven't looked at it since. I will take it out and get more info today.

Thanx.

I've got a Marlin 25MN bolt which has a 7 round mag. The stock seams full size to me but I'm not a big guy either. I've got a Leupold M8 4x33 scope on it and with good ammo it shoots 1/2"-3/4" at 50 yards from the bench and bags. I don't think they make the 25MN model anymore but used they are a good deal, should be less than $200.

The 94-22-M is VERY accurate- surprising performance from a lever gun. I'm 6'0" and it's dimensions are slightly crowded for me, compared to the Marlin 39-A. Still a pleasant hunter/shooter for me. The line has been discontinued by USRAC, and if you are considering one, better decide fast, before they are all gone....

being that as far as guns go i have what you would call a champagne taste with a beer pocket.... butt plates might be an idea... cheaper anyway.

I use a Savage 93FVSS ... had it for around 6yrs and an it's served me well. The only problem I had with it was the improper cheek weld you get with the tupperware stock that most come with. They were made for models that came with iron sites which the model I have does not. I fixed this with a Tacpro cheek rest and 10min of my time, works well enough for me and only cost me another $60 on top of the original price of the rifle. But to take it a step further if the stock doesn't suit you, I'd go with a aftermarket stock such as a Boyds, which is my next upgrade for it.

And get yourself a supply of CCI Maximags :D

I have a Zastava Z5-22 mag that I'm more than impressed with.
This thing shoots extreemly well. Ragged hole at 50 yds(Hornady 30 gn). All steel construction. Only plastic on the gun is the butt plate. They come grooved for a scope and have nice open sites as well.
If you want to do any research, these have been marketed as Zastava Z5, Charles Daly Supreme, Remington Model 5 (laminate Stock).
Their distributed out of Toronto Ont. I think it's through IZH. If you need a contact # PM me and I will get it for you.
They usually retail for around $300

Savages come with a bunch of different stocks, if the action does it for you, but the deal breaker is the stock.
Winchester 9422M is wonderful, but under $300 for one seems unrealistic to me.

I would have suggested the one I have, a 93FV...but perhaps you'd find the LOP too short on it. For some reason, I find it works (and I'm 6'2" with gorrilla-length arms) but to each his own. I'd rather have a rifle that shoots, and try to find a way to make it work! (especially where $ is tight...and it always is) When $ allows, you can always upgrade the stock to a Boyd's, as suggested already. Savages are shooters though.

You might want to track-down a Marlin XT and see if it fits. They're around $202 at my local dealer.

Save up for the Ruger. I love my 77/22 mag. I have a Savage 93 as well, no comparison.

What...the Ruger is no good? :) If you're talking build-quality/aesthetics, the Ruger is a nicer rifle. If you're talking accuracy, I'd have a tough time believing the Ruger shoots better...for about twice the price. Always a slight chance you got a stinker Savage. Slight. :)

I had a Ruger 77/22 Mag [Stainless Laminate] Regret selling it.
Was the most accurate 22 Mag I have ever owned, and that is a fair number.
It also was not ammo fussy, which is unusual.
Eagleye.

i have the 77/22 mag.it doesn`t like ccl maximags, superx it tolerates but was still disappointing until i tried the hornady 30 vmax.i just ordered all i could find:)

...another Marlin 25MN fan...
Tough , accuracy+ , follow-up shots as fast as an Enfield .

I really like my Marlin 925M. It's got a full size stock, shoots well and is just an enjoyable rifle to have. Have it listed in the EE (cough, cough) as it was my gopher gun and I now live in the gopherless tracts of N Alberta.
