Good luck Otokiak. I worked in Baker Lake in about 1980 or so and saw plenty of them not far from town. Never did get to eat any though. Well actually really no sure about that either. Some of the meals were kind of unknown. I did come home with a few nice soapstone carvings of muskox though.

Musk ox was served at the World's Fair when it was in Vancouver about 30 years ago. A bit tough but otherwise looked and tasted like beef

cheers mooncoon

Come back with a muskox.. or not at all.

Well this almost happened and we almost had to sleep under a plastic tarp. :(

It would have been over-cooked if it was tough ... very very lean meat but cooked right it will be tender and juicy. ;)

Thank you all for the good luck wishes, however we ran into the day from hell on this trip. Extra EXTRA mild day on Saturday with only approx -4 and light wind ... when it's usually anywhere from -20 to -30 this time of year and the lakes, snow are FROZEN!!! Here's the scenerio ... we started out on two ATV's and drove along a frozen river(Diane river) until we reached Diane Lake(ice) and crossed over a very small amount of land between this lake and one called Peter Lake which we travelled NW almost completely across it driving along the edges as like I said the weather this yr is super mild and we diddn't know how the ice would be.(always safer along the edges) We spotted some tuktu(caribou) out on the sides of both lakes, we spotted some ptarmigan along the way but no muskox. We pulled off Peter Lake and went on top of an esker to look around with bino's and still nothing ... onto the next esker(hills) and scope out as you can see for miles. Finally touring along the land a bit we find pretty fresh tracks ... started following them but damned if we didn't get stuck in snow several times but nothing difficult to get out of with two of us pushing and riding the ATV on top of the snow. Crossed a small pond and then got stuck in SLUSH ... that was our end there. Several hrs later of digging, pushing and pulling with both quads we only got 1 out and JUST barely. It's bloody dark now and we head back it starts to flurry(snow flying) and we wind up losing our trail only to get stuck in deep snow once again for approx 1 1/2 hrs ... finally get out find the trail as the flurries quit and headed home ... both soaked from top to bottom. Get home sit in porch for 10-15 mins for my boots to somewhat thaw to be able to take off. I'm bruised from top to bottom and pulled every muscle in my body ... HAHA Better faarken days ... but we made it home is the main thing. Now I have to go back out there with a snowmobile and qamutiq(wood sled) and pick that thing up ... approx 35 miles inland of the ugliest toughest terrain ... UGH ... :( HAHAHA. Cheers CGN,

p.s. I have a few pics to load but of course like our trip nothing's working for me today including my laptop and photobucket page. HAHAHA ... sssshoot eh?! :D

Sounds like quite an ordeal.

We use the word "kamatik" for a sled in NL too. I can't think of any other Inuit words that stuck with us though.

G P I tell you it was the worst kind of day hunting I have ever experienced ... we're just glad we got home and didn't have to sleep under a tarp after sweating all day and then freeze at nite ... ;) I still have to go back and get the other ATV out of the snow ... ugh ... :(

Kamatik, qamutiq, qamutik, kamotik ... all same thing ... :p

Keep at it if there are tags left Otokiak! I had some air dried Umingmak for the first time the other day. It was very tasty.

Yeah I plan to as there are 42 open tags I just found out ... so first come first served ... I'll be going out again ... but this time with a snowmobile and a qamutiq ... non of this ATV shizznat.

That sounds faacking horrible.

Seriously NINE it feels like somebody punched me from my ankles to my ears for an entire day ... I think my arms are about 2 inches longer today from lifting/pulling the quads out of the slush and snow and shovelling with my hands ... ugh ... it was faarken brutal!

Otokiak, sounds like quite the ordeal that's for sure...will the Atv be frozen in solid by the time you get back to it?? Had a similar story with my Ford Bronco years ago and ended up having to chop ice for hours to get it out of a river the next day.
Good luck with your recovery and good luck with the hunting!
Cheers

hawk-i it will be frozen for sure ... will need to shovel and chip away to get it out and onto a wooden qamutiq to pull with a snowmobile ... :( I just found two young lads I know who are not working and will go get it for me for a few bucks in the next day or so ... pheew as I just don't wanna have to break my body doing that again. I'll wait a couple weeks for the weather to get back to normal and FREEZE and be colder than -20 and then go look for a muskox by snowmobile which should not be a problem. Everyone has been getting stuck the last two weeks trying tohunt so most have just stopped ... small town we all talk about who got stuck where and with what ... HAHA ... already had a dozen guys come up to me today asking how i felt as they knew I was beat to snot on the weekend. HAHAHA :D

Sorry to hear you were not successful on the first day ... but at least you have a story to share with everyone elsein town :D

I do feel your pain on the ATV being stuck ... I've spent far too many hours trying to remove them from all sorts of nasty places they never should have been in. It's amazing how heavy they get the moment the leave your driveway :D

We got stuck bad in slush on the lake once ... only way to get it the next 1/3 mile was to auger a hole in the ice, drop a bar and chain down, winch it ahead, then repeat the process ... what a F'in nightmare that was ... I thought that day would never end. Wasn't even my Quad either ... I was the "idiot friend" that volunteered to help a buddy of mine :p

So let me get this right. A little soft snow, combined with some slush and a snow flurry ended your hunt.

Interesting. Very interesting.
