Bear Defense?

Oh, and DIGAF, while I respect the fact that without proper bear-wrangling courses you are loath to approach the wounded bear, I find the most ethical Back Up Black Bear Answer to be my 23 1/2" United Cutlery Stallone Special. Not for the blade, but because I keep two toothpicks and a ten foot length of clothesline in the handle; instant bear garrote.
Pete, my first Grizzly was taken with a `Leatherman` Wave, and a large rock. I stunned the Bear with a well aimed `power` throw and then, while he was out, I pulled all teeth and claws using the needle nose pliers. When the Bear came out of the stone induced coma, he made an ineffective attack on me but only succeeded in slobbering all over my shirt. I left him out there somewhere, one demoralized Bear. I did try the `garrote`route once on a Polar Bear, but probably due to the cold, the cotton kept breaking but I am glad it worked for you.

I had a plan to stay in the bush for a week this August but that did not turn out due to a house purchase. Anyway, I was going to bring only a 22 LR. It did not dawn on me until a friend asked what I would do if a black bear would attack? I did not feel like changing rifle just because of those pesky bears and my shorty shotgun was just to heavy to carry on my pack and useless with accuracy for getting small game out to 50+ yards. So my solution was, in IPSC fashion, to practice a stand off scenario where I would with my trusty 10/22 with a 12.5" Dlask barrel with a levang compensator, and T-dot bushnell 1x scope. I practiced, with my 25 round round mag loaded with solid 40 gr high vels, an extremely high and accurate rate fire on a concentrated area, a 6" circle at 20 yards. If I had to defend for a bear with that 10/22, my prepared retaliation plan would "hopefully" work. 25 shots in less that 5 seconds to the face and head area of the bear.

:redface:DIGAF, I didn't realize this was a polar bear defence thread. I'm very happy you're O.K.

I should have posted that I have only strangled bears in temperate zones, and have :eek:no experience:eek: in polar bear choking.

You know, I think I saw you subduing that polar bear when I was test flying the B-2 bomber over the arctic circle.

LOL...awesome. :D

Yes, your 10/22 is good. Common sense would tell you that 40gr bullets are the way to go, it's quite obvious the 36gr just won't deliver. If you have a few bucks to spare you should look into a tactical stock, and maybe a laser.

Good luck

Hmm, better practice by taping 25 Tootsie Pops to the bed of the old pickup, and having your oldest neighbour drive it at 40kph toward you. When you can shoot them all off before the truck hits you, you are prepared!

With the 40 grain solids, you will penetrate something somewhere on that head area. I figure out of those 25 rounds, a few would make it's way to the eyes, ears, nose, mouth area and maybe even to the brain. Just like humans and any large mammal, if you can't see or breath, your will to fight will diminish. :ar15:

Again...it's only wishful thinking on my part. It's a big "maybe" it will work. And yes I'm on crack :onCrack:. I have nothing to loose with only a 10/22 and a black bear, not a grizz.

You mean everything to gain! Where is your tactical tree cam? I would use the compensator to get the last of the peanut butter out of the jar, toss it in front of the bear, and when he bends down... WHAM! with the 3/4" threaded end! Right in the eyeball! 50 rounds of Thunderbolt thru the drum!

I'm glad this thread got back to 10-22's and real life(but slowed down Matrix style) bear defence. It was getting silly for a while.

Pete, that was you I saw in the B52.? I tried to get your attention as the Polar Bear had chewed my right leg pretty badly until I managed to stab him with the Leatherman (non serrated blade) and then had to crawl 25 kms to the nearest Red Cross outpost for help. I now limp a bit but consider myself lucky to have survived another Bear encounter. i am considering surrendering my hunting license as the Bear population around here has been diminished to the level that I very rarely see one and Racoon hunting is a pretty poor substitute particularly as I am scared of the dark.

10/22 with wheels

This thread looks like too much fun. Must jump in.

For a bear at 100 km from town, I recommend one of those guns that comes on wheels and is pulled by a Deuce (drop by your local CFB, sign-up, and you're on the team).
If you can get something self propelled, even better. Name it 'Horse' and you're good to go. Use the 10/22 on squirrels while dialing in for the 100 km shot. If you are lucky, you can bag a troll at the same time.

10/22 with wheels correction

Dang. I hate correcting my own post, but before anyone says anything, Yes I know 100 km is long even for the proposed wheeled solution.

Assumptions:
very, very, very, strong winds aloft.
Rotation of the Earth working in favor
Ummmm... downhill shot?
Paris Gun? That was good for 100 km +. Train wheels needed.

Yes, that was me in the B-26! We wanted to land but our hydraulics were shredded with tootsie-pop shrapnel from buzzing Milsparro's neighbour in post#66. We did detach one of the six belly turrets loaded with drum mags for the quad 10-22's and piloted by Timothy Treadwell. I saw the chute open but, well gee, I hope he's okay...
I also hope that you all take it easy with all these radical defence/hunting tips and leave some bears for the rest of us. Chuck Norris called me and he was crying about the lack of bears in his area.
I am scared of 3:15-4:42 in the afternoon...OOhh that gave me shivers just typing it.

So let's see if I have this right.
Full auto 22 firing 40 grain hollow point tracers, sub sonic, hard mounted on a short horse? What if the horse trips on a hoop snake and goes down?
