I think that if it weren't for Jack O'Connor, the .270 would have died and appropriatly early death.

Yesterday I was at a local gunshop and saw a one only special on a new Stevens 200 chambered in 30-06 (for $300)... old stock or left over, something like that. Anyway it got me thinking about that caliber in light of more recent and/or "popular" calibers like 270, 7mm or 300's and the like. Is 30-06 still a decent chambering for big game?I kind of thought that the deal was good but wasn't really certain about the caliber. Opinions & advice?
Ya decent round..but really gettin old and stale ..try something new for a change ..You knew the answer and wanted confirmation ..typical 30-06 owner..lol

..............One gun: .30-06
Two guns: .30-06 and .22
Three guns: .22, .223 and .30-06
Four guns: .22 LR, .223 (55-62 grains), .270 (130-150 grains), .375 H&H Magnum (270-300 grains).
Listed in order of increasing suitability to the game you'd hunt with it.
30-06 is the classic do-all cartridge with a long barrel life, terrific choice of bullets and maybe the cheapest factory ammo for big game.
I find that lately some premium ammo comes hotter in a supposedly lesser cartridges like 308. I was looking at Nosler Trophy grade ammo the other day and 150 and 165 gr loads in 308 are hotter or matching the 30-06 loads with the same bullet weights...
I don't know if this has something to do with the better efficiency of the shorter 308 cartridge with the new powders or Nosler just spent more effort on 308...
OK ..whats ur point ...the 30-06 is still OLD and every owner wants a pat on the back that they have one ..Actually the 30-06 will do alota things "OK" but can't do anything "GREAT" ..... thats why we have the 7mm, 243, 338 ect ... or the country would have nothing but that old 06..lol
A very insecure bunch, that needs a lot of reassureance.![]()
Ummm... the .30-06 is the gold standard... are there rounds that can do stuff better in different situations.... yep... is there a better round for all purpose HUNTING... no..
