That being said I have to take exception to those posters here who are taking trigger discipline lightly. Firearms safety is something nobody can afford to be complacent with, and to ignore the 4 rules is to invite injury or worse.

Who's taking 'trigger discipline lightly'???

It's a PICTURE, NOT VIDEO. You have NO idea that they didn't PROVE the WEAPON as SAFE.

Note that I used the term WEAPON: these are military guys with military WEAPONS. It's NOT CIVILIAN WORLD.

And you have NO PROOF they aren't being 100% safe handling. You are ASSUMING they aren't being safe. And you are VERY likely wrong.

How the F do you guys think you train recruits how to safely handle and USE a C7 rifle, without pulling the trigger!?!?

How do you rest the hammer springs on a firearm that's empty, without pulling the trigger? (on the 80% of firearms that have concealed hammers, that is). Pretty much ALL military weapons are designed and meant to be dry fired. Done for doing drills, and instruct in marksmanship skills before wasting tax dollars on bullets too early in the training cycle. How do you do all that? Pull the trigger. And last I checked, it's pretty difficult to pull the trigger without "putting your finger on the trigger."

No one, and I MEAN NO ONE from the military world wants unsafe handling. WE are in far more danger from unsafe handling of firearms than any normal civilian hunter or range rat: we take civilians, instruct them for 8 months and then turn them loose on live fire ranges, with humans running and themselves shooting DOWNRANGE FROM YOUR OWN SHOTS. Unsafe=dead. And I'm talking about peacetime training, not warzone firefights. I was in the service during the peacekeeping 90's, not the Taliban-2000's.

Just because someone has their finger on the trigger in a picture doesn't mean ANYTHING about safety. You can't tell what happened 1 second before the pic or 20 minutes before the pic. That other parties have also cleared empty.

I am sorry but you also don't know what happened. You don't know if they were cleared or anything. We have a photo of people with their fingers on the trigger. This is a violation of rule #3. That is the end of the discussion. To criticise people for pointing out unsafe firearms handling is just plain wrong as it invites complacency, which is what leads to firearms accidents.

I didn't realize how many closet Liberals and Anti's were here until I read this thread. :HR: Time for a break from CGN for me.

I wore MY green beret the opposite way to him - the same way as the DF. It was pretty funny walking around Ottawa wearing it in the mid-90's, and I sure got some strange looks. Folks were kind, though, and even spoke to me on occasions. Once, getting a bite to eat in the Laurier Centre, a youngster came up to me and asked if I was a Scout, too, even though I was in working dress, with a crown on my epaullettes....

In regards to "finger on the trigger" comments, these RMC Cadets are green as green can be. Most are urbanites who have never held a real gun and all it takes is an ND or some real training with live rounds up the spout to have them instinctually leave their finger outside the trigger guard until they are ready to fire.

If they are Combat Arms, they will learn sooner than later. If they are a purple trade, then they will most likely never learn because they aren't in the business of killing.

So what?!?

They checked the chamber, proven it safe, who cares if they pull the trigger on an empty chamber/empty mag?!?

If you get that excited about fingers on triggers with empty guns, imagine live fire exercises, with over 1000 rounds flying in just a minute, with people having close calls, doing fire and maneuver with two dozen soldiers...on rough ground no less...full auto bursts, tracers, mayhem...60mm mortars blowing up on target just 200m away

BEEN THERE DONE THAT, like many on this forum :D

You must be one of those types who have alot of NDs eh?

They are not kids. They are Canadian soldiers and there's a difference. That they're just hatched is neither here nor there.

Oh, cr*p - how many of us have not stood in a gun store, checked that a rifle or shotgun we were interested in was empty, then put it to our shoulder and tried the fit, sight picture and trigger pull?

Find something significant to b**** about.

My sentiments exactly. I was doing that the other day at Epps when I bought another Garand. Nobody said boo and I'm sure Wes and his people would have stopped me if they thought I was being careless.

Well with the recent events at Epps I'm amazed they didn't f:P:. No wonder why the Antis have a little bit of fact behind them ... because guys like you give it to them.

"officers with fingers on the triggers" ...it's okay, I laughed, I took it as a joke.

They're teaching young officers now-a-days that when they have a stoppage they hand it to the closest NCM and have them clear it. It starts on the range, and carried into theatre. No joke, I couldn't make that up....

That's very funny. You don't have a clue of who you're talking to. I had gun safety drillled into me before you were probably even born.

Flip my PAL around sometime if we ever meet. I like the way guys like you open their eyes wide when they read what's there.

Jim Loney.
