I want to get one of these;

and put it in a wood or laminate stock, also put a rail on it, and be able to use it with a nice scope, and then swap it out for the aperture sights for benchrest day at the club.

My only obvious concern is the price seems a tad high for a synthetic blued rifle, even though the sights are worth $150. That means i'd be paying ~ $300 for a MKII synth blued just because it is tapped and has a rail attached for the peep sight. Mind you this is all including HST and shipping BNIB.

So how easy would it be for me to find a used wood/laminate stock that would fit the gun for a reasonable cost? Has anyone used it in this configuration with the williams sights? I have read many good things about the MKII otherwise, and frankly just want one because it's Canadian made..

Boyd's stocks don't come-up for sale used often, but the one I was looking at comes in at about $130 shipped for a new one~not too bad for an upgrade down the road. As an aside, I use a 93FV with the same cheesy stock, and it's performed very well. Maybe it's my fat cheeks acting as a comb riser :) but I don't think you'll have any issues with that stock when using those irons. If you think it will be an issue with scope use, you could always consider one of those Tapco risers for about $50, and you could take it off when using the iron sites~just a thought.

I'm not a range, or competition shooter, so I don't know what the "trends" are other than combing through websites...but I have a hunch that rifle might hold it's value well~don't think many people buy them, relatively speaking. If you like the rifle, get it and try it out. I don't think I'd even consider a stock upgrade until I put a few hundred down range.

On a side note, a friend of mine just ordered a "Rimfire Hunter" stock from Boyd's as he's losing interest in the tactical look on his 93R17 TR. I'm anxious to see how that metal looks in a stock like that. I decided to upgrade my optics first, and have a new scope en route for my 93FV. :) and I'm toying with getting a couple of high-cap. mags for it now too. Alberta gopher-duty calls!

Does he want to sell the Tacticool stock?

Do any of the Boyd's stocks not require some fitting for the MKII, as they were designed for the 93?

Thanks guys, 22lrguy your right in that i'll likely be fine with the stock... stock???... But after looking at the boyds site, down the road it is the rimfire hunter in nutmeg i'd like to upgrade it to, simply because i had one of the plastic savages before and absolutely detest the plastic stocks.

I hear you. I kind of want to hate mine...but it works well enough, and hasn't failed in anyway. Like I said, priority #1 was better glass, and that's been dealt with. I almost ordered a grey laminate, then saw one of the nutmeg ones in the flesh~think I'd go that route myself. My buddy ordered the Forest Camo one (think that's the name) so I'll get a chance to see it before I do anything.

He's not loving the HMR much at all, and is hoping he'll warm to the gun more with a different stock. Think his plan was to sell the whole package if the Boyd's doesn't have the desired effect. :) I may try to get a deal on his new stock if I like it...and I see an opportunity to save some $. What are friends for? :D

Here is Aaron v's 50m 5 shot group. Nice shooting! Now I want one even more...

I put one of their thumbhole stocks on an older non-accutrigger Mk.II and the fitting consisted of dremeling off a tiny bit of wood to let the safety swing through its full arc. It took about 5 minutes including pulling the dremel out, absolutely trivial.

Alright, plan underway... As much as I'm oddly annoyed by the term " range report" for whatever reason, I'll give a range report when it arrives. Are there any specific types of ammo that work well generally out of most mkII's? I see above blazer works well, I have a shwack of cci standard velocity right now.
