Can the rem 700's trigger problems that are claimed by msnnc and others be rectified by installing a new trigger? The wife was spooked by program so no 700s in the house. I was thinking of purchasing a 17 fireball but only Remington chambers for the round

The newer rems have a different trigger system than the older ones... I personally don't believe the hype they created over that... Although I do think they should have used a top tang safety...

After market triggers certainly solve the issue, but some of them are pricey. Rifles of more recent manufacture have a different trigger than the one criticized in the NBC piece. My M-700 target gun wears an expensive Jewel trigger becasue that particular rifle's factory trigger refused to adjust to my satisfaction. My M-7 on the other hand wears the old style factory trirgger which has never failed to operate properly even though its on it's second barrel, and has a let off equal to the Jewel.

My solution is to have the trigger properly adjusted, and ignore the safety. I chamber a round when I'm about to shoot, and unchamber, should it become apparent that I will not shoot. That effectively resolves any issue which might exist with the older 700 triggers.

i'm with boomer on not depending on a safety and chambering when about to shoot. i have had lots of rems and once adjusted never an issue. i find rem triggers are very easy to work on if you have the patience to set them up correctly.

40k through Remingtons and no accidental discharges, not to say it can't happen but it seems extremely unlikely. No safety is fool proof, muzzle control is the key to preventing firearm injuries.

The new rem's have an X-Mark Pro trigger. You could install a Timney, Rifle Basix's, Jewel, etc and be done with the WALKER DEATH TRIGGER if your Model 700 were to have one.. but as others said...

Will she even know it has a Walker in it? ;)

Too much TV and lack of knowledge is a terrible thing.

The few triggers that actually had a problem were 30 years ago... a few got out of the factory with safeties that did not disengage the cocking piece from the sear... so when the trigger was pulled with the safety on, the sear was actually released but the cocking piece was held back by the safety, then when the safety was released, the firing pin was released and if loaded the rifle would fire.

The vast majority of "700 trigger problems" are directly related to incorrectly adjusted triggers after they left the factory or due to poor maintenance.

A real simple test - do it with an empty chamber... try and dry fire your rifle with the safety on, off, on, off... and slam the bolt closed and try and make it dry fire. This is something that should be done before every hunting season every year with every make of firearm you own.

Show this thread to your wife. Remington 700's are still my rifle of choice after 44 years of gunsmithing. The strongest, safest two lug bolt action ever made.

Send your trigger to the master ! Guntech - he will make it perfect for you- best money you can spent on a m700. ;)

I posted this on another forum, the Remington 700 facts:
  • USMC sniper rifle since 1968, no problems ever!
  • 5,000,000 units sold
  • 75 lawsuits against Remington, none of which were lost in court
  • 15 lawsuits settled out of courts by Remington
  • no one ever managed to reproduced an accidental discharge with a rifle which had not been modified, tampered or tuned

That being said, both USMC and US Army snipers have been prohibited from modifying or tampering with the firing mechanism following incidents.

Simply put, the design is proven , extremely reliable but there might have been a handful of faulty rifles produced over 50 years and you should never work on a trigger mechanism if you're not a qualified gunsmith, even if you're a USMC sniper.

P.S. I hope that your wife's car is not a Toyota (or a 1990s Audi) ;)
