22-250 Bullet Weights (1:14" Twist)

SC, I also had good results shooting the 70 gr Speer in a 1:14, but the same twist would not stabilize a 53 gr TSX. I don't have any 70 gr Speers on my bench to measure for comparison, but the 53 gr TSX is .793". Would you provide the length of the 70 gr Speer?
 
Sounds like some people need to get out and shoot more. I shoot in wind all the time not that hard to figure out hold over if you can see your impacts!!! If people actually got out and tried it it's not that difficult or very unbelievable.

I have shot my 22-250 quite a bit but I guess not quite enough.....I can figure out holdover (my scope does not have enough adjustment for 1000 yard shooting) but I cant make those 55gr. vmax buck the wind like I want them to...I can definitely see a difference when its windy.

MOA @ 1000 yards is quite an achivement with 55gr. Vanilla sp's.

They measure about .790". +/- with the lead tip.

I'm lucky were I shoot I have pretty consistent wind direction it makes it a little easier. I put on a set of z rings with inserts and got a much needed 30 mins now it's just dial and shoot.

Now thats interesting isn't it. A difference of only .003" between the two bullets and the 70 gr Speer stabilizes while the 53 gr TSX doesn't. With such a small difference you'd have expected the occasional elongated hole with the Speer; I don't recall seeing any, yet all of the TSX holes were elongated.

I wonder if the Speers would be "weight forward" and if that would be a factor. Also the Speers would be a bit slower in velocity. Thinking out loud here. :redface:

The point of balance for the 53 gr TSX is .365" from the base, unfortunately I don't have any Speers left to compare. I do believe I read somewhere that a bullet with parallel sides was a more stable projectile than a spitzer, that is certainly true in terminal ballistics. While the Speer doesn't have parallel sides per-say, it undoubtedly has a longer bearing surface and a less abrupt taper in the nose section, so perhaps that is what makes the difference rather than an imperceptible difference in length. The original Greenhill Formula was made to work with round nose bullets with more or less parallel sides, so bullet shape does play a part in the answer. The lower velocity of the Speer would result in a slower rate of rotation, but it might also result in less yaw upon exiting the muzzle.
 
We are in the midst of a move right now so all my stuff is packed. I won't be able to find one of those Speers for a few days, or even weeks maybe. :(

My 22-250 is 1/14" like the OP's rifle. It is an older 722 action with a new Remington heavy barrel. I have shot 55gr down to 50gr and have found that the 50gr V-Max with Varget is 'unbelievably' accurate AND consistent and I'm not even using match primers. I've used a few different Hornadys, Lapua and Seirras and this has been my observation. I buy Varget in bulk though, so I don't have much experience with other powders in this calibre. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
