AR Forgrips and kneeling positon question - options and opinions

I find the initial discussion funny about "kabooms". I have run military ranges over my career, as well as running a recruit training school. I have supervised the firing of millions of rounds of small arms ammo, plus was responsible for coordinating training and ammunition for Western Canada, and I honestly can not recall an incident like is described. I think statistically you are more likely to be struck by a meteorite than have this happen. I don't think you have to worry about the rifle exploding near a body part.

Train effectively and train often.

Okay I think there is a consensus on the following

1) the risk of the magwell bursting on an AR is slim enough that it is not a real concern

2) the magwell grip has limitations with respect to muzzle recovery an transitioning through multiple targets....but still has it's uses

3) a forward support hand position is better than magwell grip in lots of situations the above but has some limitations

4) the front knee between mag and grip is the steadiest kneeling position (nobody offered an alternative yet)

5) there is no 100% correct for everybody in every shooting situation position to hold a rifle. To borrow from Hungry - your #### won't fall off no matter what you do.

Good summation. Most shooter on the board never fire enough rounds to get serious about skill development in any case. More for entertainment than anything else and to sound informed when they discuss it with their friends!

The show is called "Tactical Impact" and they do infact use that rediculous grip on all rifles, regardless: of where the sites are located, shooting position or distance too the target.

And the two monkeys that do it are supposed to be ex-pros.

There's also someone else who makes a handstop out of polymer, but it weights like 1.75oz where as the KAC is reported to weigh ~1oz without the QD Swivel.

The Railed Magpul RVG weighs in at ~2.5oz (its been awhile since I weighed it)...

Anyway the point is, yes there is significant weight differences when looking at "Full Sized" VG's such as the Grippod, LaRue, or DD offers... But comparing the weight of the KAC to say the Magpul (or any of the "Shorty VG's" there's not a lot of difference as far as weight.

At that point it mostly comes down to price and personal preference. I personally will be swapping out the railed RVG on my main carbine for a KAC + QD Swivel just because it will remove the need for a separate QD attachment point on my rifle.

As for the grip tape, I like that idea... I may try it on a Viking Tactical tube.
 
One function of the vertical grip that MAY be useful is that you can press it against an object you are using for cover etc. This can give you a nice stable platform to shoot from.

I don't think they're mandatory on a fighting gun by any stretch, but that is one little bonus you get out of a vertical grip.

Generally speaking my preference (speaking as a non-expert so take it however you want) is not to crowd cover that much. I would like to stay back from any cover if possible because I'd rather make it harder for ricochets and spall to chew my face off. So I would think that it would be a fairly specialized application for the vertical grip. At the range, our "cover" usually consists of empty barrels, so that doesn't work there either.

But it is an application, so that's one thing some people might want to consider before ditching it entirely. Personally I'm borderline on vertical grips myself. I have given the AFG a shot and it's okay. I like it on a VZ but less so on an AR for some reason.

I also like the grip tape idea. Combined with a simple hand stop that might be nice on an NEA slabside.
 
Cadex makes a great hand stop. I think they primarily designed it to be used on SBR's so you don't get your fingers close to the muzzle, but I flipped it around and use it on my VZ to index my hand, as I was worried about mag clearance issues during reloads if I used a full size vert grip.

I still use a full length vert grip on my AR because I use MOE furniture and haven't had the heart to cut down my vert grip yet.

LaRue makes a really lightweight polymer hand stop, although I personally like the Gear Sector one the best. In terms of vertical grips, the LaRue FUG is one of (if not the) nicest vertical grips out there (probably midway between the Magpul and Troy). The Magpul RVG modification is pretty neat.
 
I believe the reason Morpheus and my self have never seen KBs is due in large part to the quality rifles and quality ammunition the CF issues.

If Capt Morgan is your QC while reloading, you are buying the cheapest steel cased Russian crap or you are buying used/ lowest price parts you may want to skip the hand grip and invest in some good eye pro and gloves.
 
Here is a pic with handstop(sorry about terrible pic.) I also have a POF 12" predator rail that I milled the side rails off and added grip tape to and its awsome feeling in the hand. On my JP V-tac (competition gun) im in the midst of makeing a "gas pedal"(like a race pistol style) for a reference point and will add tape accordingly when done.Will also post pics when completed.
