I picked up a Ruger carbine in 44mag from this site back in the spring.
I've found that my eyes are not so good anymore and I have trouble using the nice appature sight system that it came with. I fear I will have to mount an optical sight on it to take advantage of it as a 100 yard deer rifle.

I have never used the "red dot" or "quick point" type of sights. Are they any good?

Other option is a 2.5 power bushnell that has been on my 12 ga slug gun.

Any one with experience scoping a Ruger .44 carbine?

I like the suggestion of the 2.5 power scope. Or at the very least a variable that goes down quite low. A red dot would work too, but I've not found any reasonably priced one's, as in under $400-$500 that are bright enough for use in sunlight. It would be a shame to have either the batteries fail or the dot not be bright enough during a hunt.

A 2.5 fixed scope provides a wide FOV and allows most shooters to keep both eyes open.

I have one on my 1895GS and I love it for bush hunting.

I'm a ruger 44 fanatic.....best scope I have used on them (have several :) ) is the VXIII 1.5-6 X 32 with the heavy duplex reticle. Plenty fast aquisition with the HD, can zoom in to 6 for those "need to poke one through an opening" shots, and the 32 gathers a decent amount of light. Also, the scope is small enough to "fit" the 44.

Here's on on my 44 deerfield (about the same size as the carbine)

I used a 2.5X Leopold Ultralite on my 444. It was a dandy scope with outstanding eye relief (best feature), light weight, and handled the heavy recoil. I used a lo-power variable years ago and found I left it on lo power all the time. I also owned a ruger 44 years ago, a real handy little gun you got there. I loved mine but traded it on my 444. Gotta love those big 44 bullets for hunting.

I have the older 44 carbine with a Bushnell Halo sight on it. Basically it projects a red circle with a dot in it. There is no magnification. I didn't think I would like it but I love it on this little gun.
Great set up for dogging in the bush and keeping coon's and coyotes out of the chickens coup as the sight is fully adjustable for all light conditions from sun light to pitch black.

I suggest taking a long hard look at the Leupold VX-R 1.25-4. It is a hybrid between the red-dot and a magnification scope. Scope of the year in 2011. Batteries don't run out because the red-dot turns off on its own after five minutes of no use, once you move the scope (i.e raise your rifle to shoot) it resumes the brightness setting it turned off at. Also, it has great light transmission, which means it is good for use in the sun, unlike other red dots. Fast target acquisition with the red dot, very light and compact, and leupold lifetime warranty. Good magnification for tight cover and reaching out further if you need to. 2-7 might work for you as well in this model, but I know I'd go with the 1.25-4 if I was topping a Ruger 44 carbine.

What a beauty you have there! I want one oh so bad!
Been waiting for a rotary mag model to pop up.

I have used a bushnell red dot a couple times and they work great on running deer however they are a battery operated device so make sure you have always got a spare with you but they are great for fast aquasition if you are looking more for a scope I just put up a Leupold compact 4x fixed scope im looking to sell msg me if your interested

I have a new style 1x3 Weaver that would be perfect on that rifle. I currently have it on a 760 308Carbine.
