257 Roberts VS 25-06 VS .243Win

Not all have the luxury to have a job to go south and hunt. So what? you don't need a .577 to take a deer. With what I've done and learned, a 30-30 does the job. No need for fancy, ultra high velocity. Accuracy and steady head makes the shot.

It’s comical to read but we are now way off topic.

Maybe there should be a forum just for this sort of “my #### is bigger than yours” ... there would be some great humour in it all.

I guess I get to be the odd duck in the pond ... I love the looks of the triagular barrel on the new VTR's :D If it was my money, I'd have one in a heartbeat. (though I'd be looking for a stirctly Varmint gun and end up with a 22-250).

For what the OP asked, I'd ahve said 25-06, but since that was eliminated a few pages back, I'd recommend the 243. Long lived and reliable round, lots of options for reloading, reasonable factory prices. Only drawback to it is Whitetail are it's upper limit for game IMHO.

As for recoil, it really and truly depends on the gun. I've shot 243's that felt like 35 Whelens, and others that felt like average .223's. Same goes for the 25-06, though it does tend to kick a small bit more. For the general caliber range you are looking at, they all hit you abotu as hard - a pound fo recoil either way isn't going to make a difference. I believe you mentioned you reload as well, so you can always load a bit lighter for the kid and let them get accustomed to the gun before giing them full power.
 
Just tuned in from being absent for a bit. That was quite the entertaining read.

I know lots of people use the 243 for deer. Lots of people do lots of things. Doesn't mean I have to always think that what other people do is a good idea.

I don't like the 243 for deer. So there. Deal with it.

Yes, I killed a deer with one once. Doesn't mean I like the cartridge. I'd use one for coyotes, but there are still better choices for that even.

Given the options listed, I'd prefer to use a 25 caliber, and since it's for a 12 yr old girl, the 257 Roberts would be ideal.

I didn't tell anyone that they can't use a .243 for deer, just that I personally am not a fan of the cartridge, and I'd recommend the .257 Bob over the 243 for the given situation.

If that puts someone's panties in a bunch, then so be it.

Do your daughter a favour, and get a 257 roberts. It's low on recoil, and will hit the deer hard. The only deer I've ever seen shot and lost were when a 243 was used. 3 deer, 3 different occasions, 3 different hunters [none of them was me]. I'm biased against 243 and I don't trust it to get the job done on a deer.

To Ciphery: do yourself a favour and don't get a VTR. I do like Remington's, and I think the internet problems are mostly a bunch of hogwash. But I'm not too keen on the triangular barrel of the VTR. It's a weird gimicky gun, and I'd recommend not buying one.

Get a Tikka T3 in 25-06. You'll thank me later.

That being said. I am a 35 year old man who shoots right handed but has a telescoped right collar bone. (30-06 are painful as is 1/2 day of wimpy skeet shooting)

- I am looking for a versatile dual purpose gun.
243 is what I can find for chamberings in new guns...with out going to an expensive long action gun.
- I'm not MADE of money so would like a mid range priced gun with a decent price for ammo too.
-I found a Ruger M77 257bob but am leary about ;A) ammo availability/price B)bullet selection for the 25's...6mm seems to have made the 25 obsolete and companies are slowly discontinuing lines of 25 component production/price elevation/ unavailability/limited quantity.
-I agree that a little more poop behind the 243 would be nice but Don't want to pay for the WSSM version of it....gun or ammo!
-243 is the largest cal of varmint grenade made and bullet selection is from 55gr to 100gr for a 1:9.25 barrel... Seems to be standard. (Though the extremes may push the envelope a bit.)
-the 257 cal bullets seem to be a bit heavier on the top end, which is good for deer but also heavier on the bottom side and would like to keep a few coyote pelts.
- I can only find 100gr ,115gr, 120gr bullets for sale, though I am aware they were at least available down to about 75gr....there may be more sources out there but I'm looking at what is readily available to me.
-I don't disagree that a 257 roberts or 25-06 would do a better job on deer but am worried about blasting a coyote to s**t with one.
If there was a readily available 7mm mauser (parent of the bob) necked to 243cal. I'd be all over it.....but there ain't. So I lean towards the 243win because of availability, with the hopes that a top handload of a 100gr bullet will not let me down on my deer hunt. And with the thought that a properly loaded 62gr Varmint grenade or 58gr Vmax will only leave an entry hole.

-I value all your comments and opinions but dislike it when people pi$$ on each other....I know it happens I've been riled too, and it angers me to no end to have someone doubt my opinion or experiences so I understand, but please can we keep it to a minimum?


-I notice NO ONE has anything good to say about the VTR, especially its triangular barrel. Does anyone have first hand experience with one? Is it just looks you dislike? Or is it a proven poor performer?
-I would consider another make and or model however there seems to be a BIG gap in the 243 line up in my price range. For instance the savage 11FCNS is a nice gun but no one carries it in 243 only the EDGE/axis which are s**t guns and would not pi$$ on one to put out a fire.

Actually it does exist and it's called the 6mm remington. Just a little more "poop" than the 243, as you say, and it's a full commercial cartridge just like the others. Maybe that's what you are looking for?
