Hi all

I use to shoot 303 british at the range, reloaded for it, and I got tired of getting 1 1/2 inches groups, so I decided that in order to have fun at the range again, I was going to get myself another caliber. My bro in law got himself a remington 700 in 223, and I liked the caliber a lot, so I decided to get one.

At first I was looking for a Stevens 200, but I did not find one. Then I started to read about how great the Axis was shooting, I found one for 300$ shipped to my door, and I got it.

For the scope I went with a budget choice again. A guy on another forum I go to sells the Vector brand of scope. I know I know, cheap chinese scope ! I got it for 120$ shipped, it has a 4-14 magnification, and the reticle is what I wanted.

There is enough lines on it to learn to shoot by holding to the good one, and I plan to do exactly that. It is surprisingly clear for the price.

Next point to address was the flimsy plastic stock. Since my gun will be used 99% of the time at the range, I decided to go with a single shot. I made my own trigger guard using aluminium strip and a plywood jig.

The recoil lug is in the stock on a Savage Axis, I checked and it is easily removed. More on that later.

Then I started the stock. I did not want a dedicated bench stock, with flat foreend to ride on bags. I enjoy shooting prone with a bipod, and I wanted a do-it-all kinda stock. I started with a wide blank, and after doing the barrel/action machining I routed a slot for the recoil lug. It fits tight.

I needed longer action screws. I took 1/4-20 long bolts, cut the existing thread, and I re-threaded them to the proper thread (1/4-28 IIRC)

Next I worked on the trigger guard

Remember I told you that I wanted to ride front bags and use a bipod ? I installed an insert into the stock so that the front sling swivell will be easily removed so I don't tear the bags at the range.

Then I shaped the exterior. I like the A5 shape, so I started from that.

Then up with the grinder with 50 grit sandpaper for rapid (and messy) wood removal

Looks weird with the small barrel. Good news is that I found a barrel from a Savage model 12 VLP in a 1:7 twist. I'll install that later in december.

Yesterday I did a small spacer out of alumium so I can feed it better single shot.

I also made myself a buttpad out of recycled tires mat. Remember, budget project ! I got the piece of mat for free, and I did not want to buy a buttpad for this project. Yeah I know, the 3 holes don't quite align, but hey, it is made from tires !

This stuff is messy to work with, but it does not stick to the skin, it can be brushed away easily.

Next is the finish. Maybe I'll hunt coyotes and groundhog with it, and I wanted to try a green finish, so I got a "olive" stain and stained the stock.

Next will be the top coat, and the barrel swap later in December. Hope you like it !

I love your approach! Thanks for empowering all the other shooters on a budget! :D

Cheers,
Barney

So far I am at 615$ for the project

300$ Savage Axis in 223
120$ vector 4-14/50 scope
20$ reloading dies (used)
175$ used Savage 12 VLP barrel

I still need a savage barrel wrench and probably an EGR 20 MOA base. I already have a bipod that I plan on modifying a bit.

I'll be at less than 750$ for all of this.

Holy Cow!!! Budget or not that is WICKED!! Love that stock!! I wish I had the time and skills to make thing like that happen. Thanks for the posts! Cant wait to see it complete.

Very cool! I want to build a new stock for an old single action ACE that I will have access to when the LGR dies and he pulls it out of the cob webs!!
