Hi all
I use to shoot 303 british at the range, reloaded for it, and I got tired of getting 1 1/2 inches groups, so I decided that in order to have fun at the range again, I was going to get myself another caliber. My bro in law got himself a remington 700 in 223, and I liked the caliber a lot, so I decided to get one.
At first I was looking for a Stevens 200, but I did not find one. Then I started to read about how great the Axis was shooting, I found one for 300$ shipped to my door, and I got it.
For the scope I went with a budget choice again. A guy on another forum I go to sells the Vector brand of scope. I know I know, cheap chinese scope ! I got it for 120$ shipped, it has a 4-14 magnification, and the reticle is what I wanted.
There is enough lines on it to learn to shoot by holding to the good one, and I plan to do exactly that. It is surprisingly clear for the price.
Next point to address was the flimsy plastic stock. Since my gun will be used 99% of the time at the range, I decided to go with a single shot. I made my own trigger guard using aluminium strip and a plywood jig.
The recoil lug is in the stock on a Savage Axis, I checked and it is easily removed. More on that later.
Then I started the stock. I did not want a dedicated bench stock, with flat foreend to ride on bags. I enjoy shooting prone with a bipod, and I wanted a do-it-all kinda stock. I started with a wide blank, and after doing the barrel/action machining I routed a slot for the recoil lug. It fits tight.
