2011 Calgary Service Rifle Association match dates

So a January match eh? Do we have any dates set? What format? I really enjoyed the last battle rifle match. I know a guy who would come down from Prince George with his Garand for the next one.
The current thinking is a nuts deep in the snow(probably) winter battle rifle match, much like other years.

I doubt I can make it, but Cam was talking about putting one on.

or run for a board position at the AGM.
Or, help out in some other way within the Homestead complex. It is 100% member driven, and there are piles of members out there in the various clubs, but it is always the same handful steering the ship while everyone else is too busy.

The APRA, and its facilities are much like a Condo. If you live in a Condo, and are not on the board, and don't like how the building is being ran, who should you complain to?

Sure, nice not knowing You and all the fellow members who volunteer for this organization by taking my money and not providing access to this facility.

That's not fair. Do you have a key to the golf club, the curling rink, or MEC for unlimited access?

Granted, the gate access is not what many members are wanting, but see the above post on that.

The APRA/CSRA, and all other related clubs (to my knowledge) are not for profit in any way. They do not have paid members. In general, they are ran by members that wish to get more people more involved in shooting plain and simple.

Definitly going to get something going in Jan. I'm two days away from finishing my degree so have been busy as all hell.

I'd like to hear of any ideas if someone wants to try something they think would be fun. A snowshoe rundown perhaps?

There is no split. Nor can there be. The CSRA is a, for the lack of a better word, tenant of the APRA. The APRA is the lease holder for the entire facility, ie., public range, Homestead range, Swiss range, shotgun public range, pistol range. The clubs, including the CSRA, are operating under the "umbrella" of the ARPA.

I always had the key to any range that I was the member with. I don't understand the mentality You are talking about. If You are accepting the application from a new member, make it clear that there is a gate access issue and then it's gonna be fair. Otherwise You are creating a problem and frustration.

...by limiting the gate access? Plain and simple indeed.

Like most ranges, Homestead operates on a (small amount of) cash + participation basis. Other ranges have ceased to operate mainly due to a lack of user participation.

Gate access has often been an issue in one form or another out there though.

so being member would not give me access to range(i am working often in sat san and can go shooting mostly in midweek)

...and that's why it should be bring up and make clear when the new member is siging up. Each and every time. That would be fair. That never was my case unfortunatelly. I can't attend any weekend's matches, because of my working schedule. I never was told that the access is the issue. Even if I could attend the matches I still need a key to use the range over the week though. I'm asking for one since I joined last summer and all I've got was...the sound of silence. How a member may not be interested in having a key? It's not that much to ask for $250 in my opinion. That's why I'm asking for my money back now...and I'm ignored again despite 3 emails that I sent in over a month. So, if You are thinking about joining this club, better think twice. This may be one expensive, no access facility.

I don't think you're being fair. I joined feb 2011 went to my second match in March and guess what? I got a key. Why would you join a service rifle club if you never intended to shoot service rifle? If you just wanted a place to shoot long range I can think of dozens of spots on crown land that are 100% free. The 900m range is pretty poorly set up for plinking, its set up to run matches. Which is the whole point of service rifle. I also work many weekends, match schdule is up in jan, how hard is it to book a few Sundays off to make the matches? I do it. I shot almost every match this year and had a bunch of fun and met a pile of good people. The opertunity was there for you to do the same.

When did I say that my intention is not to shoot the service rifle? I can't do it right now, because of my working schedule. In my case shooting is not a hobby, I do carry a gun for a living and need to train with it on regular basis to stay proficient. Having access to the ranges (including the handgun range) is important for me and the crown land is not an option. I won't book off my working days to attend the matches, because under current circumstances I can't. It's not my priority either. New members should be advised about the gate access issue if there is such. Obviously it's too much to ask.

Nester, I think you are touching on some of why some of the other ranges you have been a member of ceased. I don't know your situation, but I know that many of the CSRA board can go at least hour for hour with you commitment wise, but yet take the time to help out the community.

On the other side of the fence, I know we have some members whose time is more valuable then my own. I won't single anyone out(they are online now, and can chime in if they like), but one is a specific type of a Dr. that is helpful to society. I will deliver a key to people like this, and do whatever I can to keep them in the hobby.

If your time is indeed more valuable then that of those on the CSRA board, by all means, shoot the board an email. Otherwise, man up and step up, or you will likely find many of your hobbies you are passively involved in do not exist.

I wish You all the best Guys. Between volunteering with the APRA and SAR I will pick up SAR anytime. I feel I may contribute more that way. No matter what gonna happen with my money, I decided to sign up with the indoor range in Calgary where I will enjoy the benefit of access on my days off. Again, it should be made clear to any, new member that there is a gate access issue. If I knew that I wouldn't be a member now. All the best.

That could be dangerous. I know when I try to run on my snowshoes I end up face down in the snow. I'd hate to fall on my rifle?

Anyway if I'm on days off I'd show up no matter what the temp/snow conditions. Could we combine a precision type rifle course of fire as well? That way guys could bring their bolt guns and semi's as long as they are still classified under the "battle rifle" class. I'd love to be able to shoot my CG 63 say at 600, 500, 400 and then my M1A at 300, 200, 100. Just a thought. Keep us informed!

WTF!!!! I received this email this morning!!!! Are you telling me I no longer have a club and therefore no longer have a valid ATT!!!!

To the Members of Calgary Service Rifle

Due to the Calgary Service Rifle executives inability to consistently remit membership dues to the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association during the periods of 2011, 2010 and 2009 the APRA has regrettably found itself forced to find the CSRA membership not in good standing. No CSRA memberships will be deemed current or active until such time as the CSRA executive can sufficiently satisfy the concerns of the APRA executive. All CSRA electronic keys will be turned off effective immediately. We are sorry that this action was required and encourage the membership to contact your executive to seek a resolution.

Again WTF!!! I have paid my dues in full and now I cant use the range that I paid for!!! Extremely PISSED OFF!!!
