Is there a difference between the chinese sks and the russian sks? I can buy a chinese one for 180 or a russian for 225 at my local gun shop. is there a difference in quality between them?

Yes and no

The russian stocks are better hands down

The russian SKSs do have less tool marks but shoot and work no better then the "PLA issue" chinese SKSs

The non PLA SKS 56s are junk though "ie SKS-D and other civi market built guns"

How can you distinguish the standard Norinco SKS from the Chinese military issue SKS?

PLA issue will have 3 Chinese characters by the ser#

Thanks Dwiwy. Now, why are the PLA versions better than the standard Norinco's?

They seem to be built to a higher standard "as they were made for the PLA not the US sporting market"

Other Norinco guns were heavly refurbed from old rusty PLA issue guns and had there markings milled off and re serialized.

All the new Norincos coming into Canada seem to be the PLA issue ones :)

I don't think it's that straight forward because current Marstar's "military" SKSs have no Chinese characters next to serial number. Does it make them "non-PLA" and thus non-military then?

I own a refurbished russian SKS (200$) and the 75$ Marstar's chinese SKS. I prefer the russian: the wood quality is better, the mechanism is smoother, it's easier to disassemble and reassemble...

No, there were many factories building PLA SKS's and each had their own ways. You can spot a civi SKS a mile off, they say "made in China" on them and IIRC 7.62x39 and Norinco. Military SKS do not denote caliber. What Dsiwy said about quality is true in some cases. Every factory had a different level of quality. Marstar's factory 625 rifles are sub-par. Functionally theyre excellent rifles but aesthetically they arent the best. Factory 26 rifles are built on original Soviet tooling from Tula, and are some of the best you can get. Factory 306 was a good one too. The wood has a crappy varnish that looks like ass, but underneath is a real diamond in the rough. Refinished Chinese mil. SKS wood is rather nice. With Chinese you are getting a brand new rifle, while a Russian will be refurbed. Both will run like a top, its up to you which one you like better.

IMHO the russian SKS are much nicer finished, smoother and some with some beautiful laminated wood.

their performance is similar, but for a few bucks more you can have the Original.

No, Marstar has two factories's guns that I have seen. 625 and 306. The 625 guns are PLA, but are late mfgr and do not have the characters. The 306 guns are from a different factory but do have the characters. They are military though, straight out of depot stores.

I have owned both and much prefer the 306 - I use one as my shooter SKS now.

Then what factory/year this recent Marstar rifle is ???

P.S. sorry TS for routing this a bit off top.

As for year of manufacture who know's for sure. Only Factory /26\ marked ones can be dated. I'd say from the look of it Factory/625\ built it. Might even be one of the sanitized for Nam versions. Too bad they pinned through the 0 on it. I'll put the bat signal out for Howie, maybe he can shed some light on it for us.
