Brock Lesner Charged in Alberta

Calgary Herald:
“A whitetail deer was found in the possession of the taxidermist and was not tagged and as a result of that an investigation ensued,” said Sustainable Resource Development spokesman Darcy Whiteside.

Not sure what to think about this, In Alberta you tag deer around one of the hind leg tendons, you must not affix the tag around a deer’s antler base. So if all that was at a taxidermist was the cape and head there would be no tag, however the taxidermist must record your WIN and tag number in case of inspection.
A follow up on the recorded tag number the taxidermist had may have been what caused problems for one reason or another.

Obviously idle speculation but, what if there was no whitetail tag, period?

I am not from Alberta, but if you must attach the tag to the hind leg tendons how can you prove from the video he did not. Also as others have said how can you prove someone did not go back for the rest of the meat? You would think if someone is doing something illegal they would not be videotaping it and then have some company with lots of lawyers in the hunting industry advertise it. I do not watch whatever sport he is into but you would not think he would jeopardize bad publicity unless it was the WWF:).

I'm guessing there was other evidence that lead to the charges. Newspapers are not always the best source of "facts".

When I had my antlers mounted last year the taxidermist made darn sure he had the "head" portion of my tag. When I had a bearskin rug done, the guy made sure he had the appropriate tags. I'm surprised the taxidermist would even accept a trophy without a tag. They get checked all the time, and could even be in doo-doo for having something illegal in there posession.

No tags in Alberta to give a taxidermist....the single tag remains with the hind quarter. Bighorn sheep are the exception.

They would have the tag info though.

Why would someone poach a deer, then take it to a taxidermist...pretty easy way to get caught ain't it?

He's seems like a decent hunter to me and hell I'd love to have him in my hunt camp. Aint no deer he couldn't drag out. I don't know albertas game laws but I know the mnr will take something small and simple and complicate it

The video is of his mule deer, as other posters have mentioned, his tag issue stems from something inappropriate with a whitetail.

Time will tell what, if anything, his personnel involvement may be.
My baseless guess is that his guide might have been pulling off some shenanigans that he may not have known was wrong. Certainly wouldn’t be the first time a guide has gotten a non-resident alien hunter unknowingly in trouble.

To me it's just another way to drag down hunting. Specially with celebrity status, I personally support all hunters.

Looks like he got off with a $1740 fine and a 1 month suspension from Hunting in Canada.

If it were one of us Canadians we would probably have a 2yr hunting ban + a larger fine.

Charges were improper tagging and taking only the trophy head of a Mule Deer.
