Does anyone else here hunt the misc hunting properties offered by the Grand River Conservation Authority? I've mostly hunted and explored the properties close to Waterloo and Guelph but I haven't yet paid the properties up towards Mount Forest and the Luther Marsh a visit.

If anyone else hunts these lands, share your intel! I'm planning on making a trip up to the northern properties around Mount Forest sometime soon, primarily to scout for good coyote, turkey and rabbit properties. If anyone hunts or has hunted these properties, I'd appreciate any pointers as to which tracts are more promising than others.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about...the Grand River Conservation Authority has 20 or so properties, all of which are 100 acres+, which are huntable by a special permit. It costs $65 for the year (Sept to last day of Feb, open again for Spring turkey) and the one permit covers all the properties (their year being Sept-May rather than the calender year). You have to be a member of OFAH to acquire the permit.

Hiking and walking your dog, having a picnic etc is permitted for free so you could scout the tracts ahead of time to decide if its worth the cost of the permit or not if you like.

Anyhow..if anyone else hunts these areas let me know if they're any good for coyote, turkey and rabbit.

Correction: If you have NFA/CSSA membership, that works too. Talked to the head of GRCA and objected on grounds that my liability insurance with CSSA is just as valid, and I chose not to patronize OFAH (am a handgun owner). He said it's fine, any liability insurance is OK, just didn't know anybody besides OFAH.

Good post... although I don't like the idea of a "permit" to hunt on CROWN LAND. Which it is, isn't it?

Oh even better then. I don't know what exactly the land is considered... I have a friend who works for the Toronto conservation authority and swears up and down they're not government. They do contract work for the government...or so he says. Quasi-private-public entity or not, it's not a huge fee and I'm ok with paying it if it gets thrown into a fund to grab more tracts of land to hunt, or ensures that the existing lands are kept free of the picnic trash and potato chip bags that dingbats leave behind. I see what you're saying. If it's public we shouldn't be paying. On the other hand, if people complain about the scary gun they saw getting loaded into a trunk by a shady character dressed in camo while they were walking their dog...at least us paying gives us the high ground as far as land-use goes. The land wouldn't be there without the hunters who paid for it.

I got a permit this year. Haven't head out yet. Any updates from anyone? I tried asking for some harvest reports but they said they do nothing with their harvest data. I just was hoping to get some idea of what each property holds without having to drive everywhere
